When folks ask what organizations and institutions would have the most success working with me, my answer is simple: "Those that are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of the systemically marginalized." But not just organizations that are committed to SAYING the right things on their website or strategic plans, but ones that have a DEMONSTRATED and ONGOING commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. What does this look like in practice? It involves collaborating with a client to translate slide decks and learning materials into languages that reflect the communities they serve. It also involves contracting professional translators to do simultaneous interpretation during feedback and reflection meetings, as seen below. Accessibility Tip of the Day 176: Accessibility benefits everyone, not just those with specific identifiable disabilities. One example of this is how accessibility considerations can help non-native speakers of any language. Consider a website in English being used by someone who speaks English as a second language. The following accessibility considerations may end up helping this person as well: - Use simple language - Add captions to videos - Don't impose time limits on content disappearing These practices all benefit people who may need more time to read or understand the information, regardless of disability status. Today is the International Day of Sign Languages, a great opportunity to highlight the importance of inclusive communication. Did you know that while countries like the UK, USA, and Ireland all use English as a spoken language, their sign languages are entirely different? British Sign Language (BSL), American Sign Language (ASL), and Irish Sign Language (ISL) each have their own grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Sign languages are as diverse as spoken languages, with different countries and regions developing their own systems. Has your organisation ever used a sign language picture from the internet in their communications without checking if it is British Sign Language (BSL) or one of the other international sign languages? What message could such a mistake be sending to potential and existing deaf customers?
