With the economy the way that it is, most companies instinctively have cut back on hiring. But I've seen firsthand how that knee-jerk reaction can backfire. Slow periods are actually prime opportunities to get aggressive with talent acquisition strategies. The talent pool is deeper, making it easier to reel in those MVP candidates who were previously out of reach. Companies willing to lean into recruiting now will be primed to pounce when growth rebounds. Rather than going into hibernation mode, forward-thinkers should use this window to refine processes, amplify their employer brand, and start building a talent pipeline aligned with long-term objectives. Always enjoy reading Brian Fink's perspective on different topics related to Talent acquisition. In his latest post, he writes about 2024 being the year of Talent acquisition again, and I couldn’t agree more. If you are in the TA field, you may have noticed the increase in job posts and more companies needing to rebuild their Talent acquisition teams after the devastating 2022/2023 nose dive our industry took, where many have lost their jobs and had to pivot. The challenge will be that companies will be more careful with how they are building back up the function. Increase in contract-to-hire opportunities, moderate cash compensations, and slower growth. And if the rumors of 2024 heading to be another IPO boom, then we know that the pace will pick up and companies will scale their teams even faster. If you are a TA leader who is not thinking one step ahead, networking, interviewing, and planning for the second part of 2024, then you will fall behind, and the pressure will increase on existing team members. At the risk of making enemies, "big name" companies don't recruit talent cause they don't even know what that looks like. I may be wrong here but here's my experience: So many "talent hunters" or HR executives define talent as "who can do a good job at what we are doing/what we want to do" or "who has x years of experience". Which is extremely baffling considering that in my books talent is "someone who does things that we don't do, has ideas that we don't have and can potentially get us better results than our current practices do". The whole concept of being talented is being a forward thinker and the process of recruitment most of the times is so inherently biased towards the practices of the past and the "corporate stars" of the past that it is no wonder that start-ups, small businesses, individuals and digital creators are the living engine of innovation. All these people at some point got rejected from some talent hunter or recruiter cause their talent was too "forward" to even be recognised as one!
