Has this situation ever happened to you in automotive sales? How do you handle customers that creep through your lot? At the very least, you need to get a conversation started. And, we've found that approaching buyers on their trade is a great way to get them out of their vehicle and started through the sales process.

In your opinion, what is the most important step in the sales process? For me, it was always FACT FINDING. I could never sell anything without knowing the customers hot / cold button, wants and needs. Sell the sizzle! Also, TRIAL CLOSE. After every single test drive. I asked one question. “Is this the vehicle you see yourself taking home “TODAY?” That one question told me everything and if the answer was anything but YES, I circled back to the customers answers I learned from fact finding to figure out why the answer is not a YES. I started on the line 18 years ago and I’ll never forget the sales process framed on the wall in the sales office at Menlo Mazda. From selling $15,000 Mazda 3’s to $500,000 Rolls Royce Phantoms, my process never changed. I don’t think it is emphasized enough today that the car is sold OUTSIDE. Though every step is important and not to be skipped, in your opinion, what is the most important step?

🚗 Sales Managers 🚙 You got a lead! The potential customer has a trade. Amazing! We need/want more cars for our pre-owned department. You shouldn't care if it has 230,000kms or 30,000kms. Every Trade is the opportunity for profit. BUT, how we are handling/responding to those leads with a trade involved? Usually it is the same way and it is BORING!! Your customer is usually not engaged by "Thank you for inquiring with us, we actually have a customer looking for a 2011 Hyundai Elantra right now". The potential customer will usually lose interest and not respond. We all know one thing about ourselves and that is THAT WE LOVE TO TALK ABOUT US AND OUR THINGS, so lets engage that emotion right away and ask them about their things. If the customer doesn't answer their phone(which we all know most of us don't, even if we know who it is) we should text or email them RIGHT AWAY and ask questions. If you text: Salesperson: Hi Customer XXXX, This is Derrick from ABC Motors. Thank you for inquiring with us. I just have a couple questions. Does your 2011 Elantra have cloth or leather seats? Customer: Cloth Salesperson: Does it have Cruise Control? Customer: Yes it does. Salesperson: Ok. Great! is it Auto or Manual? Customer: Auto. Salesperson: Sorry for all the questions, we just want to make sure we can provide you a proper estimate(KEY OPERATIVE WORDING HERE) Does it have a sunroof and is it a hatchback or sedan? You get the picture here. The more we can engage that customer on their vehicle the more you build that relationship with them, which we know is key to earning their trust and ultimately selling them a car. If you email them make sure the subject line is THEIR CAR, 2011 Hyundai Elantra. But follow the same steps as text. When we started doing this, we would get a 90% response rate, and would book 65%+ of those customers. UP YOUR GAME, DON'T BE THE SAME AS EVERY DEALER ON YOUR BLOCK. Mystery shop your competition and then be better.
