“Bespoke” or “off-the-peg”? — Earth Observation will need to adapt its offering to users as it becomes more mainstream Some say we are in the ‘golden age’ of Earth Observation (EO) with huge numbers of diverse remote sensing platforms in orbit and terabytes of data being downloaded daily. However, too often the potential of this technology does not become mainstream because we are not able to scale up to fully operational sustainable services. To borrow a tailoring metaphor, we are still building “bespoke” solutions to solve individual customer’s problems rather than offering “off the peg” products that can be used by the masses. This is not a new dilemma, but in this article, I want to lay out the issues, illuminate some experiences from a different age and offer a way forward where the tools we have to hand can be applied more effectively.

The importance of space sustainability/ space debris removal. The recent news about the space junk that came from the International Space Station three years ago and ended up going through a house in Florida, really highlights the importance of space debris removal and reusable rockets, which reduce the amount of space debris. Low Earth orbit (LEO) is an orbital space junk yard that constantly poses a risk. As more and more launches happen each year with a large number of satellites, this risk is only going to increase. Wayfinder, https://lnkd.in/dnsqVrYN, is a great website to show you the amount of space debris. It really puts into perspective how important the space debris removal companies are to the future of space and space sustainability. What’s your thoughts on the amount of debris we have in space? #spacedebris #space #internationalspacestation

Thanks, as always, Theresa Hitchens for the insightful reporting. I get the skepticism. I get the concern that the industry might not be there. These are just of few things that are still unknown in this nascent, and game changing capability. What I don't understand is why not make these satellites capable of refueling? Whether you do or don't refuel them is a question that can be answered as the technology matures. Why not at least study what it would take to pivot now vs. waiting a decade or more and spending $10+B on an architecture that is, from a maneuver warfare standpoint, no better than what we have today. Instead of waiting for the answer, why don't we drive to the answer?

Just in time for GIS Day, my presentation on SpaceTimeIDs at FOSS4G North America is now live. Over the last three years I have been working to revise and upgrade the Stare Department’s management, processing, and dissemination of international boundaries data. This has involved some deep work on managing lines that change over time and persistent linking to relevant documents. The talk below details the approach we developed called “SpaceTime IDs”. I’m very excited at the potential for this approach to adopted broadly. Outside of SpaceTimeIDs and the BASE application, the public is already benefiting from much of this work. The Large Scale International Boundaries (LSIB) dataset is now released using new quality control processes and with ISO validated metadata, GIS application files, and associated styling files. We will be releasing more of the products of this boundary work in the next couple of months. Good stuff is coming. If GIScience and data management is you’re thing, hope you’ll watch the presentation. Would love any feedback, especially on things we might have missed. Thanks to Project Geospatial for getting it live. https://lnkd.in/gmUQzacr
