Understanding Emission Factors: The Difference Between Location-based, Market-based and Supplier-Specific Methods🔓🌳 An emission factor is a tool to quantify the environmental impact of GHG emissions, helping organizations measure their carbon footprint. While regulatory frameworks typically require location-based emission reporting, leading standards like PCAF, the GHG Protocol, WRI, and the CDP advocate for reporting across all three emission factor types. In the world of carbon reporting, knowing the difference between these methods is crucial. Let’s dive in! 🤿 🌍 Location-based: Reflects the average emission intensities of either national or regional energy grids. Ideal for compliance reporting. However, it does not consider renewable energy consumption or specific supplier emissions. 📈 Market-based: Offsetting credits or renewable energy certificates are considered in the emission factors of the market-based method. Taking into account companies’ purchases of renewable energy and investments in emission reduction projects. This can provide a more accurate picture of companies’ carbon footprint. However, verifying and tracking offsetting projects are complex. 🏭 Supplier-specific: Offers the most accurate representation!
