Are you a tugboat or a lighthouse? 🤔 I always use this analogy when speaking to some of my team - "Are you a Tugboat (follower) or a Lighthouse (Leader)?" But after doing more research, I found some interesting insights into the 'tugboats' role... The tugboat forcefully guides ships to the harbour, much like some people who push, convince, and manipulate others to achieve their goals. We’ve all experienced—or perhaps been—the tugboat, pushing someone toward what we think is best. But as the old saying goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." On the other hand, the lighthouse stands firm and shines brightly, illuminating the path without direct intervention. It allows each ship’s captain the freedom to navigate based on the light provided - and shall we say, the lighthouse reminds them of the direction, even when times get a little rough...🤔 I then realised that perhaps I was using it in the wrong context, but am I? I guess it depends on how you want to be seen, or lead your team and people around you. For me, the 'lighthouse' approach is a more empowering way to interact with others. Instead of forcing actions, we can inspire and lead by example. In both personal and professional realms, I've found the lighthouse approach to be far more effective. By being authentically ourselves and providing a clear, consistent example, we allow others the space to make their own choices and grow. Certainly, in my experience, the lighthouse method fosters a deeper, more genuine connection and respect 💪🏼 So, which one would you prefer —a tugboat or a lighthouse?

Cape Horn #Leadership Lessons for sailors… and #business captains #Part3 Leadership lesson #3 > Cruising with safety 1) Get your priorities right. As a captain you are responsible to deliver your crew safely to port. Don't let your pride or needs get in the way. Think and act in the following order of priorities: #1 Safety, #2 Resources consumption, #3 Comfort, #4 Route, #5 Time of navigation. 2) Sail with discipline and cautiousness. Resize the sails as external conditions change before it is required. A common saying puts it neatly: "If a gust of wind has you consider resizing the sails, you are already late at doing so". Avoid unecessary risks at all costs. Mistrust map and lead information. Add safety margin to all your calcultations. 3) Be economical. With everything. Food, water, gas, efforts. Because navigation in dangerous waters can take you to unexpected challenges live in a gregarious way aboard. Spare and fight waste at all costs. You never know what is ahead of you and when you will be able to refurnish. 4) Always know your whereabouts (Rule of the 4 "Ls", Lead, Log, Longitude and Lookout). A captain should know in any moment the depth of the water below his ship to avoid wreckage risk (Lead), the miles run since leaving harbor and the ones remaining to the next (Log), his position on the chart (Longitude & latitude) and what is around him (Lookout) 5) Only make changes when all is in control. Only change your methods, learn new ways, and reorganize everything when the sea is calm, and all is good. Making changes when facing the storm increases the chances of wreckage or injury. 6) Relentlessly check VCW. Let’s start with the obvious. The sea is not man natural environment. Respect that and understand there is a thin line between the enjoyable human challenge of flowing with a hostile environment and life-threatening disarray and distress. So constantly check the status of your Vessel, the mood of your Crew and signs of changing Weather. When a storm approaches, there is a moment of enjoyable calm before it starts. Unexperienced captains relax and enjoy. Seasoned captains check VCW. 7) Indulge the person at the helm. Before taking and after taking your shift, indulge the next in line preparing a hot beverage and some snacks. Taking the helm or being assigned for the forward watch is a demanding task which requires focus and concentration. This indulgement will ease the transfer of task and create the right context for critical information exchange about the navigation. 8) Delegate with responsibility. As a captain you delegate the task, not the responsability. Worry about your commands being as explicit and univocal as possible. Any misunderstanding or misinterpretation has bad consequences: at minimum: delays, at maximum: injury or death. Make sure that you prepare the brief for the upcoming helm shift and your crew knows when to wake you up if conditions change.
