Delighted with the performance of our Exploit Development Group (EDG) members Alex P. and McCaulay H. at the #pwn2own Automotive Cyber Security Challenge in #Tokyo this week. During the event, that focused on elevating automotive cybersecurity through ethical hacking, the pair managed to successfully hack an EV charging station and two infotainment systems. A marvelous display of skill, technique and sheer brilliance!
Matt Lewis, Global Head of Research at NCC Group comments "The Pwn2Own events are fantastic for a number of reasons. They help world-class vulnerability researchers like EDG showcase their skills against a multitude of different technologies, while the affected vendors benefit from the responsible disclosure facilitated by ZDI which allows them to expedite security fixes and patches for vulnerabilities in their products and systems. The competition focus on technology areas - namely automotive most recently in Japan, also helps shine a light on broader, more systemic security vulnerabilities that can affect entire classes of technology and sectors - the research outputs from these competitions helps uplift entire sectors to improved security posture through better software and hardware security development processes, and even helps regulators understand where further action may be required around product security and safety."
Andy Davis ☑Global Transport Practice Director adds “As Transport Practice Director at NCC for almost a decade, I'm really excited that Pwn2Own has now fully committed to automotive technology and hopefully will include other transport modes in the future. I have always enjoyed the Pwn2Own concept and the benefits it has brought to the security of technology in industries such as mobile handsets, printers and other consumer tech. I was very keen for EDG to be able to publicly demonstrate some of the cool techniques that are possible against automotive components such as infotainment head units and EV chargers, that often only our transport industry clients get to see. Competitions such as Pwn2Own are a great forum for skilled security researchers to really demonstrate some innovative software and hardware exploitation techniques and how they can be chained together to achieve maximum impact."
A huge congratulations both, so proud to have you as part of the team!
