During last year's IMTS show, Mesago announced to their American audience that they were indeed creating an American version of FormNext for the 2025 season. I attended the FormNext shows over the years and really enjoyed them. However, during the question and answer session I was distressed. Mesago and AMT have deliberately put the show right between the AMUG and Rapid/TCT additive shows just weeks apart. They have done this in an attempt to kill off the competition and they admitted to that. This is just plain bad business and reminds me of the old school American business practices that have hurt our country. More to the point, this is bad for our AM industry. Concerning exhibitors, They are forced to make a choice between exhibiting at which show because you cannot ship their booths to all three shows in time. They can ship to the AMUG and then Rapid/TCT in time or they can ship just to FormNext USA. They will have to make a choice. In my discussions with the German OEMs they are not happy about this as are most of the European and Asian AM concerns. If I was in their shoes, I would go where I had experience in successful sales and not in a new venue/event. This would be bad for FormNext USA to get off the ground. This is bad for the AM attendees. AM professionals work very hard and long hours. We like to go to as many AM events as we can and we can't normally justify being gone from work back to back to back. We have to make a choice. We do not want to make this choice. Additionally, the AM community is unlike any other industry. It is a strong fellowship with outstanding networking and life long relationships. We look forward to seeing each other once or twice a year and this could split up the AM people. From this point of view, this shows that either Mesago and AMT do understand the AM industry or do not care about it. With all of the uncertainties in the world and the economy, we do not need to see such division and old school business tactics. AM can be the savior for manufacturing and its future. Is there room for another AM show in North America? The answer is yes especially as the AM industry will continue to grow but please do not divide us now. Move the FormNext USA to the Fall of 2025.

This #tradeshow exec who was intimately involved with E3 did not want to go on the record, but I asked them if I could share their wisdom and insights. They agreed. Let's get the conversation going. What's your experience with E3, as an attendee, exhibitor, organizer, supplier? Here's an excerpt of that email: "Thanks for sending out a counterpoint to the media hysteria over E3. You were kind to say the show was on life support. I would argue it passed away in 2020, and the family has decided to have a celebration of life in 2023. I think there would be an interesting story on the 'why' that the broader exhibition industry might appreciate. As you stated the overall industry is booming, but shows that struggled going into the pandemic have really struggled coming out of the pandemic. [As reported by the CEIR - Center for Exhibition Industry Research and as reported in TSNN/ENN from 2023 financials by publicly traded companies like RX Global, Information, GES - Global Experience Specialists, Easyfairs]   The ESA is comprised of only 20 or so hardware and game manufacturers. If you recall, the show was cancelled in or around 2006, brought back as a festival and returned as a show. As time passed, the member companies could not gain consensus on should the show be a show, should it be open to the public, should there be retail buyer only days. The show was sold or the rights to the show were sold to RX, and RX wanted to try and stage a 2023 show. They couldn’t get the member companies to agree on the format, audience, etc.   Rarely do shows out perform their respective industry, and fundamental changes within an industry always manifest themselves in the industry show. The channel of distribution of content has changed over the years. The days of aisles of games being sold at a Best Buy or Target are over. Most games are sold direct to consumer. With this change, big box stores stopped sending buyers to the show. Additionally, the game manufacturers started holding their own consumer events. Why? Because the ESA couldn’t gain consensus or meet their needs with E3. Lastly, another show has spawned from the distribution change, Twitchcon! Twitch is the platform owned by Amazon, where gamers can play together or broadcast each other playing games.   There has been considerable consolidation within the industry. Activision/Blizzard & Bethesda being bought by Microsoft, Zynga by Take2. Exhibitors who had significant footprint in the show were acquired and added as a product by the gaming platform companies.   There are key takeaways that every show might want to understand: Member Alignment, Consolidation, Change in Buyers." I went to CES 2024 and I did not even get a lousy T-Shirt 😊 10 thoughts about CES 2024 with Laurent Satre for Rézoway 1 – in CES, the “S” is for SHOW and that is exactly what it is. 4000 exhibitors and close to 150,000 attendees. Don’t try to meet everybody and see everything. Plan your visit! 2 – Personal opinion (PO): 2 days is more than enough if you have planned carefully. By the way, CES is not one single venue. It several venues separated by some distance. Again, plan your visits to each venue. 3 – Because it is a SHOW, some companies go to great lengths to have spectacular displays or demos. All that shines is not gold, the saying goes. 4 – As a startup, don’t go there to find clients but to acquire visibility. As for investors? A VC gave a presentation at a cocktail reception we attended: bottom line: he spends 15 seconds in front of each booth. THAT’S IT. So anything you say about your product has to be crystal clear and punchy. 5 – As always, some companies present their latest and greatest gadgets. Personal opinion: I don’t need a smart toilet or a “customized shower experience”, but that’s me..Makes for good entertainment though 😊 6 – Of course, all these gadgets consume ELECTRICITY. So much for energy frugality… 7 – The words I saw more often: AI – Smart – Connected. 8 – I would say that almost half of the attendees were from Asia (Korea, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, etc). Incredible number of Asian exhibitors as well. 9 – The key to a successful CES attendance is planning. Make appointments in advance (and beware of the different venues). Was it worth it: yes. Would I go back: yes but not every year. 10 – Stuff I really liked: REair, MIMO DETECT. Qarnot, ProovStation(just a selection, there were a bunch of other very cool companies and products) Cheers!
