In our refreshed Blueprint coming soon, we explore how high-performing education systems work hard to bring people and institutions across the community together on behalf of young people. This piece by Dr. Cassandra Herring of the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity offers examples of just that. The revamp of the Gifted Education Programme and the focus on further acknowledging the need to give all children opportunities were my favourites in this year's National Day Rally Speech by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. To me, it recognises the need to give time for our children to grow up, to build relationships, friendship and to play also. This developmental phase is important to life in general and in later years. https://lnkd.in/gKmhvYzi

The Guardian's article "England's secondary schools are Dickensian – no wonder children are staying away", highlights the importance of our work in transforming education. This piece describes the urgent need for our schools to evolve beyond outdated, one-size-fits-all systems. I advocate for educational reform, and I commit to helping schools create dynamic, interactive, and rewarding learning environments that meet the needs of students today. Let's work together to build educational systems that foster creative, critical, and collaborative thinking that leads to lifelong and significant learning. The future of education depends on our actions now. https://lnkd.in/dZCc_kVB

Elevating Excellence: Shaping Tomorrow's Leaders at Pax Academia High School At Pax Academia, we believe that parental involvement is critical to student success. According to research, parental involvement really does make a difference, and not just academically, but socially and emotionally, too. Check it out. ✔️ When parents are involved in their children's schooling, students show higher academic achievement, school engagement, and motivation. (APA) ✔️ School practices encouraging families to support their child's math learning at home led to higher percentages of students scoring at or above proficiency on standardized math tests. (Johns Hopkins University Center on School, Family and Community Partnerships) ✔️ Parent involvement with reading activities has a positive impact on reading achievement, language comprehension, and expressive language skills, as well as students' interest in reading, attitudes toward reading, and level of attention in the classroom. (National Literacy Trust) ✔️ Parental involvement lead to improved academic outcomes, but it also has a positive impact on students' social and emotional skills and decreases instances of delinquency. In addition, students with more involved parents are more likely to have fun, enjoy school, have high self-esteem, and perceive school as a satisfying experience. (APA) Research shows that parental involvement significantly benefits students academically, socially, and emotionally. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gfWjDsmP

Thank you Robert Avossa, Ed.D. and Dr. Brent Jones for writing and sharing this thought leadership piece. I've seen the success of a classroom, grade level, and school building when the non-academic barriers to learning have been effectively addressed through supporting educators and providing mental health services to students. A Principal once said to me, "I'll reduce the number of Reading Specialists on my campus to have more mental health services because addressing the underlying cause of a students deficit in reading, undiagnosed/untreated mental health challenges, did more for my campus reading scores than any intervention I've implemented." These strategies (shared from the article) are spot on! "So, what can we do? First, light- to medium-scale self-care and wellness programs for educators should be table stakes. Next, address the non-academic barriers to learning by empowering and equipping school teams with practical, evidence-based tools to anticipate and defuse behaviors that are disruptive to learning, and to identify signs of mental health challenges. Not just once. Embed these strategies in the new-teacher training curriculum, make it part of annual training followed by coaching, and bring in third-party experts in these fields to avoid overstaffing and overtaxing your existing trainers."
Take a few minutes to read and share an article I coauthored with the Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools about removing non-academic barriers to accelerate learning - Dr. Brent Jones https://lnkd.in/ekmdVUn6

No child should have to defy the odds to get a great education, but within our current system, the Massachusetts and Colorado schools highlighted in two new reports demonstrate what’s possible. These schools, all serving low-income communities, use data-driven decision-making, tiered academic supports, purposeful family engagement, and high-quality educator professional development and instructional materials to ensure their students have the educational access and opportunity they want and deserve. https://bit.ly/463SyKT
