I was at a corporate offsite with a bunch of co-workers when I got unstuck. I always looked forward to corporate offsites. It was a pain to prep and travel, but I’d come back to the office with a clearer head. At this offsite, the facilitator led us through exercises to create our “word for the year.” He sent us on a long walk with some prompts like “What would make this next year win?” and “What do you want your next three years to look like?” We were on a bike path by the river when my word hit me. “VISION.” I realized I had no vision for my future. I had short term missions – Finish the report. Do the dishes. Plow the driveway. But my long term vision was vague - Make money. Be a good dad. Be a good husband. I finally defined what my success looked liked during that offsite: - I wanted to help people in some way. Still vague, but it was pointing in a different direction than my existing career. - And I wanted to help people in the outdoors. Get outside. Use nature to slow down. Six years later, I started hosting Durable Dad Days for men. They’re similar to a corporate offsite in the sense that you pull back from life. Get out of the “office.” Answer important questions when you’re not in the weeds. This Sunday, use the Durable Dad Day as your personal “offsite.” Especially if you’re not in the habit of doing them already. You can take the exercises with you and model future offsites for yourself moving forward. Tap here to get in on it 👉 https://buff.ly/3S1Woyq

Did we mention we are celebrating our 25th year in business? Our founder Clare Harris reflected on some of the challenges and changes we’re experienced over those years in an interview with Hannah Prevett in The Times recently. While Talking Tables Ltd | B Corp was able to grow during Covid, for example, we have been impacted by its seismic effect on working from home: ‘Where Covid has been a challenge is the impact it has had on ways of working. Harris is a proponent of office-based working, but says it has been difficult to attract more senior staff in particular, who frequently request to work from home. The policy at Talking Tables, which is based in Stockwell, southwest London, is to allow employees one day at home, but to be office-based the rest of the time. “My stance is that we are a company that brings people together, and as a society we need to be careful what we wish for. My son is 22 — I don’t wish for him to be working in a bedroom. I made some of my greatest friends at work where we were colleagues. I think it would be lonely working from home,” Harris said. She says there are also practical reasons for in-person working. “We deal in product, and if everyone is working from home the product will come out the wrong colour, the wrong size, and it just works slower,” Harris said. She adds that the tide is turning — when hiring for a senior position recently she noticed that “there’s quite a few people who have worked from home for four years and now want to get back into the office”.’ Thank you to Hannah for such an interesting feature. Some days, the view from "the office" can be more exciting than others. The picture doesn't quite do it justice: this was a very close and very unexpected encounter, perhaps less than 30 feet between us at one point. Meetings like this are a stark reminder of the privilege and responsibility of living, working, and recreating in the home of these impressive beings. How much do you know about these neighbors? When you buy a drone you use it whenever you get a chance.
Great times with great people for opening week. Tons left to do, but we are psyched to finally open the Rushdown office.
