Hi Network, I am pleased to announce that I have completed the Summer Virtual internship program (IEUK)! I would like to express my gratitude to all the speakers I heard from during the program as they offered words of encouragement and guidance which is always appreciated especially as I begin to find a footing in the legal field. The first day consisted of a range of talkscentred around transferable skills and working on your personal brand thanks to Ajay Kabra. I found the talk very insightful as I was motivated to make changes to my own CV by including skills I thought may not be relevant to the legal field but I am finding a way to bridge the gap between my retail experience and aspirations of being a solicitor. A key takeaway from the first day was also the importance of building a relationship with employers whilst telling my story. Although knowing how important networking already is I learnt that it is ‘easy to build a rapport when you have common ground with the employer’. In future, I aim to research who I am being employed by and create further conversation by identifying that common ground. On the second day I was given the opportunity to listen to the very inspiring story of Laura Tye and her journey. What stood out to me from her keynote was the emphasis she placed on resilience whilst embarking on your legal career. She mentioned that it is okay to not be the finished product on the first day, which was encouraging as it assured me that regardless of the obstacles I may face I am not alone and my journey does not necessarily have to be a linear one, the most important thing is to persevere. We then heard from Chris Williams and Ana Paula Favretto who spoke about their journey and current positions at Clyde & Co. They proposed a list of key attributes such as: - The importance of setting your own goals - this is significant as it is easy to become complacent and complete tasks we are set and expected to achieve however to build a strong sense of self and feel fulfilled it is essential to have separate expectations for yourself. - Independent thinking and trusting in your unique abilities/perspective - this was particularly useful to me as we must remember that we all have our own strengths and unique thought processes and that alone sets us apart from each other regardless of how saturated a field may appear. - They also mentioned that curiosity is important for the mere fact of having and remaining interested in your role/task. - Lastly it was mentioned that having an excitement for adventure and coming out of your comfort zone is helpful which speaks for itself. You must be willing to throw yourself out there and try new things even if you aren’t too confident or comfortable. We heard from others namely: Shona Coffer, Shanice Holder, Daniel Burnand and Georgina Graham (she/her).
