This is where the concept of the liquid tree comes in, a revolutionary invention devised by Serbian researchers. While real trees are irreplaceable for their environmental benefits, this inventive approach aims to complement ecological initiatives in densely populated cities with minimal green space. Although it's clear that nothing can truly replicate the multiple benefits of real trees, this inventive solution offers a unique opportunity to improve urban greenery and combat climate problems in tight spaces. 💡At City of Trees, we're big fans of the tulip tree for its amazing flowers and ability to grow into a landmark tree. Exciting new research has only added to our appreciation. Also known as yellow poplar, these trees have been proven to be a top performer in carbon capture. All trees are natural carbon sinks, meaning they absorb and store large amounts of carbon dioxide from the air, however, scientists have recently discovered that the tulip tree is extra carbon-hungry due to its recently classified 'midwood' status. 👇🏼Read more about the discovery below and how this could prove valuable in tackling the climate crisis. For as long as scientists have studied trees, we have categorised them into two types based on the sort of wood they make. Softwoods include pines and firs and generally grow faster than hardwoods, like oaks and maples, which can take several decades to mature and make a denser wood. However, our recent research has uncovered something completely new: a third category we’re calling “midwood”. This discovery could prove to be valuable in the fight against rising carbon dioxide (#CO2) levels in Earth’s atmosphere – the primary cause of #climatechange. Trees are natural carbon sinks. This means they absorb huge amounts of CO₂ from the air and store it in their wood. The tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), also known as the yellow poplar, is a top performer in #carboncapture. In the mid-#Atlantic #US, forests dominated by tulip trees store between two and six times more carbon than forests where other species prevail. The tulip tree is already popular in plantations in parts of south-east #Asia and cited as a good choice for carbon capture for gardeners and urban planners in the US. This species, along with its close relative the #Chinese tulip tree (Liriodendron chinense), belongs to an ancient lineage dating back 50-30 million years — a period marked by significant shifts in atmospheric CO₂. Only these two species survive. And until recently, their chemistry and structure, which might tell us why these trees are so good at capturing carbon, were largely unknown. Traditional methods for analysing the internal structure of wood overlook the differences between living and dried wood, the latter being much easier to study. That’s a problem because, without water, wood at the molecular level changes. The challenge is to observe wood that still retains its water. We overcame this by using a technique known as low-temperature scanning electron microscopy in the Sainsbury Laboratory at #CambridgeUniversity. This lets us observe wood on a nanometer scale – seeing structures that are over 6,000 times smaller than a single strand of human hair – while preserving the wood’s moisture to give a more accurate impression of what the wood looks like while the tree is alive. The evolution of wood structure We studied various trees in the Cambridge University Botanic Garden to understand the evolution of wood structures. We collected living samples of plants that represent key milestones in evolutionary history. These plants are a short walk to the microscope, enabling us to examine the samples without them drying out. 

A Scottish peatland has this week become the first wetlands area to be awarded UNESCO heritage site status. The Flow Country is the most expansive, intact and best example of a blanket bog system in the world.    With restoration of peatlands now an important focus on the environmental agenda, this is great news for the site to receive such a respected accolade – there are only 121 landscapes in the world that can boast UNESCO status.    A blanket bog is formed predominately in upland habitats when peat becomes waterlogged because of poor drainage. The peatland is acidic and infertile, meaning few plants other than heathers and cotton grasses survive.    There are approximately 2.25 million ha of blanket bog in the UK with most found in Scotland. Britain and Ireland together contain over 20% of the worlds blanket bog.     Some facts about the Flow Country site:  👉 It covers 4,000 sq km in the far north of Scotland  👉 It began to form naturally 10,000 years ago as glaciers melted  👉 In some areas the peat is believed to be over 10m thick storing more carbon than all Britain’s woodlands and forests – 400 million tonnes Peatlands play a significant role in carbon capture, water regulation and enable natural environments to thrive increasing biodiversity. However, over 80% of the UK’s peatlands have been degraded over a sustained period of time due to drainage and grazing. There are currently numerous projects underway to restore these areas.    Bluesky’s aerial imagery and derived datasets can support the planning and ongoing management of environmental restoration projects. From the literature review to interviews, the conservation field was surveyed to find out what green means to us. It seems that there is a lack of consensus on the term. There are a lot of different interpretations and approaches, leading to misunderstandings and misuse of materials or treatments. What constitutes "green" for one part of the world might be different elsewhere, and what seems to be a priority can actually have various complications and side effects. Not to mention the nuances of conservation which add additional variables - from the efficacy of a product to how many times a treatment will need to be repeated. It's not simple enough to calculate the carbon footprint of treatment or the toxicity of a material. It seems that "green" is not so straightforward in the conservation world. But it's something that is being talked about A LOT! We care! We all want to be green, or at least greenER.
