Mentoring: An essential tool for any workplace I am privileged to work with education, not-for-profit, and corporate organisations in leadership, management, and communication. Today is no different. I am working with my #EdithCowanUniversity Master in Education students, and we will focus on mentoring as a tool for school improvement. Mentoring is a learning conversation between an experienced and a less experienced person in the workplace. It works well when quality-trained mentors are specifically selected for their soft and technical skills and are passionate about providing guidance, reflective and responsive feedback, and confidence to their mentees. A good mentor also offers emotional support and networking opportunities while walking the career journey alongside their mentee. I have implemented numerous quality mentoring programs across all sectors across Australia. When done well, mentoring enhances skill development and offers a career development process that opens leadership opportunities. Co-founder & CEO at Mustard Studio Ltd | Transforming Cinema and Hospitality Experiences | Independent Cinema & Film Specialist | Brand & Culture
Mentoring matters! Your mentors make all the difference when you're a leader. Mentors can guide you to success, sharing their knowledge and expertise, and helping you avoid pitfalls. As a leader, you should know the benefits of mentorship and how it can help you progress in your career: higher job satisfaction, career growth, and a sense of fulfilment. But what about paying it forward? By paying it forward, we not only help others grow and develop, but we also create a culture of mutual support and understanding. When we share our experiences and insights with others, we're not only giving them valuable advice, but we're also deepening our own understanding of the industry and our place in it. This is especially important in industries like cinema and hospitality, where building strong relationships and fostering a sense of community are crucial for success. There are some fantastic mentoring schemes out there, particularly UNIC's Women's Cinema Leadership Programme, where Mustard's Kate Gerova is a mentor. Additionally, Film London Connect's mentoring programme for 18-24-year-olds, designed for new entrants to the film industry, is another excellent initiative. I am also participating in this programme as a mentor. #mentoring #mentorship #payingitforward

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆. Thinking back on my own leadership journey, having a mentor was a game-changer, especially as I was learning how to influence. One of my past bosses, who continued to support me for years after I left, helped me to plan approaches to tough situations and be assertive about my ideas and needs. This really buoyed my confidence, and set the path for my career. I will always fondly remember the generosity of this person - all for the price of a cup of coffee! Mentors are like helpful guides in leadership, showing you the way to be more confident and skilled. To all new leaders, give mentorship a go—it really makes a difference! (And to anyone who has a mentor - make sure you say thanks!) #Mentorship #LeadershipJourney #InternationalMentoringDay

Embracing "Shaqat" in the Storm: A Leadership Lesson for Education Leaders In the fast-paced world of education leadership, where storms of challenges and uncertainties often arise, there exists a powerful Hebrew concept that resonates profoundly: "Shaqat," meaning silence. In the context of our professional journey, this ancient word takes on a new and enlightening significance, reminding us of the strength found in staying calm and maintaining faith, even in the face of tempests. As education leaders, our ability to navigate turbulent waters is a testament to our commitment to creating a culture of peace within our workplace. In the midst of chaos, adopting the essence of "Shaqat" can be a transformative approach, fostering resilience, harmony, and a sense of purpose. In times of crisis or uncertainty, it's easy to succumb to the chaos and allow the storm to dictate our reactions. However, the true mark of a leader lies in their ability to remain composed, grounded, and unshaken. Like a captain guiding a ship through tumultuous seas, we must steer our teams with a calm demeanor, reassuring them that there is a steady hand at the helm. Faith plays a pivotal role in our leadership journey. Regardless of individual beliefs, having faith is about trusting that there is a higher purpose and a greater force guiding our path. In moments of uncertainty, reminding ourselves and our teams to stay anchored in faith can be a source of strength. For those who draw inspiration from Christian teachings, the reassurance that Jesus is in control can provide solace and inspire confidence. Creating an atmosphere of calm amidst the storm not only benefits our personal well-being but also has a ripple effect on those we lead. When education leaders embody "Shaqat," it sets the tone for the entire workplace, encouraging a collective response rooted in composure and resilience. This, in turn, allows for more effective problem-solving, collaboration, and a greater sense of unity among team members. In the realm of education, where challenges are abundant and the future is often uncertain, embracing "Shaqat" becomes a powerful leadership tool. As we guide our teams through the storms, let us be reminded that our ability to stay calm and maintain faith not only shapes our own journey but also influences the educational landscape we are responsible for cultivating. May the wisdom of "Shaqat" guide us, and may the calm we cultivate become the cornerstone of a resilient and thriving educational community.

“Wait, what?! Did someone just say mentors are only for junior staff or people starting out? Sip your tea, because we’ve got some things to clear up!” 🫖 Here are a few wild ideas about mentoring that we’ve heard (and had to laugh about): 🔥 “Mentoring is only for newbies.” Not true! Reverse mentoring is a thing. Yep, even senior leaders can be mentees, learning fresh perspectives from those with different experiences. 💼 “It’s all about advancing your career.” Think again! Mentoring goes way beyond work. It’s about personal growth, emotional intelligence, and yes — even life advice! It’s not just professional development, but holistic development. 🤑 “Mentors should connect me with funders or grants.” Woah, slow down! Your mentor is there to guide you, not write cheques. Mentors provide insight, not financial support — let’s not confuse the two. 🧑🦳 “Mentors always have to be older and wiser.” Mentoring is less about age and more about perspective. Sometimes a younger person can teach you things you wouldn’t expect — it’s about exchange, not just expertise. Now, we want to hear from you! What’s the most bizarre or off-the-wall thing you’ve heard about mentoring? Drop it in the comments — the stranger, the better! 🤯 🤭 🫖 #MentoringMatters #MentoringMyths #ReverseMentoring #LeadershipDevelopment #LeadershipGrowth #Mentoring

What Shapes Leadership Behavior? Leadership is a journey, not a destination. It's shaped through blends of experiences, and I discovered this truth a couple of years back. ✍️Imagine stepping into a new role and institution, with a role for a critical school evaluation – all within a tight 6-month window. That was my reality. A global team was coming to assess our IBPYP program, and every aspect of the school needed to be aligned with the philosophy – educators, senior school facilitators, students, management, parents, even the support staff. It was daunting! Thankfully, I had a phenomenal mentor and support team who saw leadership potential in me, even when I felt like a newcomer struggling to grasp the ropes. Their guidance, coupled with my own drive to learn, became the fuel for this intense chase. Collaboration, Focus, and Unlearning: Preparation started with embarking on a marathon of collaborative meetings. Every voice mattered, every detail counted. Invested heavily in professional development sessions to ensure everyone was on the same page about the IBPYP philosophy. It was a constant learning curve for me – I had to "unlearn" to fully embrace the program's philosophy. But the true test was keeping everyone focused on the common goal. We juggled the needs of various stakeholders – educators, students, parents, management – ensuring everyone felt involved and supported throughout the process. ✍️The Rewards of Stepping Up: Looking back, this experience was a turning point in my leadership development pushing me to new heights honing skills in: 📌Leading Collaborative Efforts: I learned the power of inclusive decision-making and fostering a team environment. 📌Building Emotional Intelligence: Empathy and clear communication became crucial in the diverse needs of stakeholders. 📌Adaptability: Embracing change and "unlearning" as a team were essential for success in this new environment. This experience also solidified the importance of the following influences on leadership behavior: 📌Values & Beliefs: My core values of collaboration and learning, perfectly aligned with the school's mission, fueling my commitment to the task. 📌Emotional Intelligence (EQ): Developing my EQ allowed me to connect with the team and navigate complex emotions during the high-pressure evaluation. 📌Personality Traits: My natural curiosity and openness to new experiences came in handy as I delved into the IBPYP program. 📌Experiences & Mentorship: This challenging experience, coupled with my mentor's guidance, shaped my leadership approach significantly. Team dynamics was a key factor. We always start at some point. What was the starting point for you? Share your thoughts in the comments! My takeaways - be open to opportunities, embrace adaptability, and never stop learning. Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys begin with a leap of faith. #leadershipdevelopment #emotionalintelligence #mentorship
