Being Brave To Have A Conversation That Matters In today’s dynamic world, brave conversations are essential for fostering growth and innovation. These dialogues challenge our thinking and push us beyond our comfort zones. However, it’s crucial to remember that assumptions can be a barrier to effective communication. They can lead to misunderstandings and missed opportunities. Therefore, it's important to approach each conversation with an open mind and a genuine curiosity about the other person’s perspective. Clear communication is also vital. Being explicit about your intentions and thoughts helps build trust and ensures your message is understood. School leaders have the unique opportunity to foster an environment where brave conversations thrive. This week at #AISWA, I had the privilege of working with school leaders in the communication space. Together, we explored what it means to be brave and have courageous conversations. We used neuroscience to apply various strategies to relevant situations, as well as using techniques such as active listening, positive reinforcement, and mindful engagement. The Magic of Collective Goals: The iMPACT Mentoring Program There is a unique magic that unfolds when great minds come together with collective goals for the common good. This magic is vividly illustrated in the iMPACT Mentoring Program, where sharing ideas and fostering growth among peers creates a ripple effect of positive change. The iMPACT Mentoring Program stands out for its inclusive approach, particularly in its support for students with ADHD. This thoughtful inclusion ensures that every student, regardless of their challenges, has the opportunity to succeed. Our trained peer mentors walk alongside their mentees with ADHD, offering guidance, understanding, and encouragement. This journey transcends academic support; it is about building confidence, developing coping strategies, and fostering a sense of belonging. Peer mentors in this program gain invaluable skills and insights, learning the importance of empathy, patience, and resilience. They become not just academic guides, but also pillars of support and inspiration for their mentees. This program is a testament to what can be achieved when schools unite with a shared vision. The collaboration between #BobHawkeCollege, #ChurchlandsSeniorHighSchool, #ShentonCollege, and #PerthModernCollege has created a supportive network that benefits all students involved. It is a shining example of how we can harness the strengths of our community to make a lasting difference. Together, we are not just mentoring but building a future where every student feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential. This is the magic of collective goals and shared vision. I recognise the work of Lisa Campbell #BobHawkeCollege and Trish Rechichi FAIM at #uwa for their significant contribution to the project. I also recognise all the staff in the respective schools who supported the implementation, monitoring and evaluation process and a BIG thank you to all the peer mentors and mentees and their parents who have been part of the process. And...that is a wrap! Today marks a significant milestone for the dedicated participants of Cohort 2 in the #AISWA Early Career Teachers (ECTs) Program. Completing Day 4 of this transformative journey enabled them to delve into the fascinating world of neuroscience, uncovering its profound impact on teaching, learning, and professional connections. Their commitment to understanding the intricate workings of the brain and applying this knowledge to foster deeper connections with their students and colleagues was genuinely inspiring. By embracing neuroscience insights, they enhanced their teaching practices and nurtured a more empathetic and supportive educational environment. This day was also a testament to growing awareness of their teacher and professional identities. The ECTs showed remarkable dedication to self-reflection and professional growth, qualities that will undoubtedly shape the future of education. To each of you, thank you for your passion, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Your journey is a beacon of hope and inspiration for the entire educational community. Keep shining brightly, and continue to make a difference in the lives of those you teach. Congratulations on completing Day 4, and here’s to many more days of learning, growth, and success! The Power of Choice: Navigating the Gap Between Stimulus and Response Every day, we are faced with countless moments of choice. These moments, though often seemingly insignificant, collectively shape the trajectory of our lives and the lives of those around us. Viktor Frankl, a renowned psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, eloquently described the critical space between stimulus and response. It is within this gap that our power to choose resides. The Gap: A Space for Reflection Frankl’s concept of the gap between stimulus and response highlights the importance of pausing to reflect before reacting. This space allows us to consider our options, evaluate potential outcomes, and make conscious decisions. In our fast-paced world, it is easy to react impulsively, but taking a moment to think can lead to more thoughtful and impactful choices. Everyday Choices From the moment we wake up, we are bombarded with decisions. What to eat for breakfast, how to respond to an email, whether to exercise or not—each choice, no matter how small, contributes to the larger picture of our lives. By becoming more aware of these everyday decisions, we can start seeing their profound impact. The Impact on Others Our choices do not exist in a vacuum. They ripple outwards, affecting those around us. This week, I had the privilege of connecting with many emerging and middle leaders. Our discussions often centered around the importance of being mindful of our choices and their effects on others. Whether it’s a decision made in a boardroom or a casual conversation with a colleague, the awareness of our impact can lead to more compassionate and effective leadership. Practical Steps to Mindful Decision-Making Pause and Reflect: Before reacting, take a moment to breathe and consider your options. Evaluate Outcomes: Think about the potential consequences of each choice. Seek Input: When possible, consult with others to gain different perspectives. Align with Values: Ensure your decisions are in line with your core values and principles. Learn and Adapt: Reflect on past decisions and learn from them to improve future choices. The power of choice is a profound gift. By taking the time to stop and think about our decisions, we can navigate the gap between stimulus and response with greater awareness and intention. This mindful approach not only enhances our own lives but also positively influences those around us. As we continue to engage with the leaders of tomorrow, let us remember the importance of this space and its incredible potential. #business #healthwa #nurses Alexandra Pervan Australian Catholic University St John of God Health Care John Marinucci Sandra Harrison Carl Ward Emily Oliphant Fiona Taukulis Kathryn Mandla Lisa Norman Mat Campbell Samantha Hunter Mathew Fogg Dr Jenny Brockis Lisa Wilkins Tara Hunter Elizabeth Hlaing Karen Koehler Karen Harris Kayne Franich Karen Buckingham ASA Australian Local Government Women's Association Western Australia Branch
