Our London team hosted a local support event in Croydon today as part of our Day Three activity celebrating #RefugeeWeek. We were pleased to welcome a variety of services who provided valuable advice and guidance to our Service Users, including representatives from Croydon Council, the local Jobcentre Plus, CALAT (Croydon Adult Learning and Training), and Croydon College's team delivering the Department for Education’s Multiply scheme, who held a budgeting and financial advice session. In the North East our team has been busy attending a variety of events around the local area to raise awareness of the support on offer through the Refugee Employability Programme. These events included a drop-in hosted by FODI Sunderland, and a breakfast event held by Back on the Map. Supporting this year’s Refugee Week theme of ‘Our Home’, our North East team also attended the ‘Home is a shared meal’ event at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, and the ‘Our body is our home’ event hosted by the Comfrey Project. We were pleased to be joined by Rail Futures at our breakfast event this morning. They have many opportunities for people to get free training which results in a work trial. Thank you to everyone we have connected with for your time and support. We look forward to working alongside you to support refugees to begin their new lives in in England. 📚 Cultural Orientation: Empowering Refugees in Their New Communities At REACT DC, we understand that arriving in a new country can be overwhelming for refugees. That’s why we provide essential cultural orientation through our Reception and Placement (R&P) Program, in partnership with the IRC and the U.S. State Department. From the moment they arrive, refugees are equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to successfully navigate life in the U.S. Our cultural orientation sessions cover everything from understanding local transportation and healthcare systems, to enrolling children in school, accessing social services, and learning about U.S. laws and customs. We also help refugees connect with job opportunities, legal support, and other community services to ensure a smooth transition into their new lives. ✨ Why is cultural orientation important? Cultural orientation provides refugees with the tools they need to feel empowered and confident as they integrate into their new communities. It’s about more than just surviving—it’s about thriving. By learning about the resources available to them, refugees can make informed decisions, find stability, and embrace the opportunities ahead. 💖 How you can help: Your support makes a direct impact. By donating, you help us provide these critical services, ensuring that every refugee has access to the knowledge and resources they need to build a successful future. 👉 Help us spread this knowledge: https://lnkd.in/emXjqdvU #EmpowerRefugees #WelcomingRefugees #CulturalOrientation #BuildingNewLives #GivingTuesday Together, we can ensure that every refugee feels supported and empowered from day one!

When I became a refugee, my world fell apart. I lost my home, my community, and the dreams I had for my future. I felt lost, upset, disappointed, and utterly confused. Everything seemed uncertain, and for a long time, I couldn’t see a way forward. But then, something incredible happened. I discovered #JesuitWorldwideLearning (#JWL)—a beacon of hope in the darkness. Through their digital learning programs, I was able to access higher education, right where I was. #JWL didn’t just offer me courses; it gave me the tools to rebuild my life. With every class I attended, I felt my confidence returning. The knowledge I gained showed me that I still had potential, that I could still contribute meaningfully to the world. Today, I have a purpose: to advocate for others like me, to empower refugees with education, and to drive positive change. But my story is just one among millions. Refugee youth, uprooted from their homes and dreams, often feel the same despair I once did. Digital education can change that. It has the power to reach even the most remote areas, turning refugee camps into centers of opportunity. With the right support, these young people can rediscover their potential and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities. 💡 Let’s invest in initiatives like #JWL. Let’s advocate for policies that make digital education accessible to all refugees. Together, we can ensure that no young person is left behind because of war or displacement. Because education isn’t just about learning it’s about hope, dignity, and a second chance. #RefugeeEducation #JWL #DigitalLearning #EducationForAll #HopeThroughEducation

In our recent op-ed, School for International Training president Sophia Howlett and I highlight the crucial role U.S. colleges and universities can—and should—play in supporting refugee resettlement. These efforts can have a profoundly positive impact on campuses and their surrounding economies. We not only believe this to be true but know this definitively, having experienced it firsthand through World Learning's New Vermonter Education Program (NVEP) and Supporting Higher Education Refugee Resettlement (SHERR) program. 𝗨𝗼𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗲𝘀 Last week was World Refugee Day, a time for us to reflect on the many challenges facing the world's 114 million refugees. One of their greatest challenges is the lack of higher education opportunities providing them with a path forward to a better life. #UoPeople is proud to serve over 16,500 refugees – more than any other university in the world. However, the need for these educational “lifelines” is greater than ever. That is why, UoPeople is pledging to enroll 25,000 refugee students by 2030. Our pledge is in support of the UN Refugee Agency’s 15by30 initiative which aims to enroll 15% of the world’s university-aged refugees by 2030. Currently only 7% of refugees have access to higher education – far below the 40% average of non-refugees. To help achieve this goal, I am urging each of the world’s 31,000 institutions of higher ed to enroll 15 refugees. Universities can easily enroll 15 additional students without a major impact on their budgets. If UoPeople can enroll more than 16,500 refugees, surely other universities around the globe can open their doors wider to provide similar opportunities to these individuals in need. Wherever you are in the world, if this is your wakeup or stay awake cup, take a minute to share #CoffeeWithShai. If you believe in what we do, please like this video and repost it. #refugees #educatingrefugees #collegesanduniversities #highered #onlinelearning #highereducation #syrianrefugees #ukrainianrefugees #afghanrefugees

On this World Refugee Day, we at World Learning Learning and School for International Training are honored to reaffirm our commitment to supporting refugee resettlement efforts. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel A. Cardona recently co-signed a powerful letter addressed to U.S. universities and colleges. This letter underscores the critical role these institutions can—and should—play in resettling refugees. At World Learning and SIT, we are proud to support these efforts through our New Vermonter Education Program (NVEP) and Supporting Higher Education in Refugee Resettlement (SHERR) program. We know the challenges facing higher education are great and many. But we also know that supporting refugee resettlement directly advances the mission of higher education and benefits not only refugees but the entire community.
