This growth far exceeded the sector's average monthly job creation of 54,000 in 2023. The industry's robust expansion was driven by significant job additions in ambulatory care and hospital settings, with ambulatory care facilities averaging 26,700 new jobs per month and hospitals averaging 15,300. This growth trend has been consistent since 2022, with ambulatory service centers being the primary contributors. The latest healthcare jobs report from Altarum showed that hiring is still not keeping up with new job openings. The job openings rate was 7.7% in January 2024, versus a hiring rate of 3.2%. Health care employment increased by 66,700 in February, above the 12-month average of 60,100. February’s health care job growth was led by growth in ambulatory health care services, which added 28,000 jobs, and hospitals, which added 27,700 jobs. Nursing and residential care facilities added 11,000 jobs in February. Within this industry, nursing care facilities added 6,400 jobs while other nursing and residential care facilities added 4,600 jobs in February. At Supplemental Health Care, we are still seeing a tight labor market in most of our settings of care. 2023 saw significant job growth in the healthcare industry, with the latest jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealing some compelling numbers. The industry added 37,700 jobs in December alone, with employment continuing to trend up in various healthcare settings. Ambulatory healthcare services and hospitals saw substantial growth, adding 19,200 and 15,300 jobs, respectively. Moreover, employment in physician offices and nursing and residential care facilities also increased. Overall, the industry averaged 55,000 monthly job gains in 2023, compared to 46,000 in 2022.
