World Waterfowl Day Ducks, geese and swans are amazing! Some are well known, most are not! Collectively known as waterfowl or wildfowl, many are under threat from destruction and pollution of their wetland habitats, over exploitation and even indifference. These wonderful birds have been a key part of my life since I first met ducks on the local park pond as a toddler. And waterfowl now have their own annual international day, which I for one am very happy to see - 17 January! Find out more about this new annual event and why it has been inaugurated below. World Waterfowl Day Mission: 1. Increase public awareness, knowledge and interest in all species within the order Anseriformes (waterfowl/wildfowl). 2. Happy Monday Have-Your-Say Day! Island Nature Update: The Island, along with the rest of the UK, has seen even our most familiar wildlife disappear from our fields or doorsteps this century. The good news is there's hope! We can reverse the trend, counter biodiversity loss and help nature to thrive across the country! Island Nature, the Isle of Wight’s draft Local Nature Recovery Strategy has set out the vision for Nature Recovery across the Island – recent gains to be built on, opportunities to enhance and extend and deliver nature-based solutions. Thousands of Islanders have contributed expertise and advice so far. Please share your thoughts and feedback on this roadmap for nature recovery. Once it goes live, the strategy, maps and website will be designed to help access the information needed to take action. Whether you are a farmer or landowner, resident, eNGO or Island business and whether you manage 1000ha or a handkerchief front garden, the local nature recovery strategy will work better with your feedback and support. Head to www.islandnature.org to learn more about LNRS, the Island’s natural past, present and future, watch the videos and take part in the short feedback questionnaire! The UK’s National Trust is celebrating its 130th anniversary with an ambitious “moonshot” goal: restoring over 617,000 acres of natural spaces, equivalent to one-and-a-half times the size of Greater London. This bold initiative aims to reverse the decline of nature and tackle climate change by reconnecting landscapes into thriving habitats. Hilary McGrady , the trust’s director general, emphasized the urgency of this effort, saying, “Nature is declining before our eyes, and climate change is threatening homes and habitats on a colossal scale.” The plan includes collaborations with private landowners and communities, as the trust itself doesn’t own enough degraded land to meet this monumental target. Examples of their vision include the restoration of Lunt Farm in Liverpool, where 90,000 native trees will be planted to connect the land to the Mersey Forest, creating a vital corridor for wildlife. In the Shropshire Hills, degraded meadows have been transformed into vibrant, flowering habitats, providing crucial connections for local species. Harry Bowell , the trust’s director of land and nature, called the project a “moonshot” but believes it’s achievable due to extensive mapping and planning. The trust’s dedication to protecting and restoring the UK’s natural beauty continues to inspire, marking this milestone anniversary with hope and action for the future. Original author Andy Corbley . At Gubra, we aim to give back more than we take. But what specific actions can we take to achieve this? And how can we join forces for nature? One significant step has been our restoration of 150 hectares of farmland into nature and forest. While 20 Galloway cows graze the open nature areas, invasive lupins have started to move in. To combat this, our 12 dedicated Green Panellists went to Langeland, working together across departments to remove the invasive plants and restore habitats for native species. Taking action for nature is part of our green culture. Together, we can make a difference! Immersing oneself in the world of expeditions often reveals profound insights and experiences. From navigating through tornadoes to learning decision-making in high-stress scenarios, these adventures test resilience and adaptability. Encounters with wildlife, like black bears and ticks, add to the intensity. The journey with the Grand Portage Band of the Chippewa to track moose in Ontario highlighted the deep connection between indigenous cultures and their environment. Witnessing the majestic moose and understanding their decline underlines the urgent need for conservation efforts. Such experiences underscore the importance of both personal growth and environmental stewardship. 🌱 Restoring Native Forests and Respecting First Nations Knowledge 🌱 As Chair of Greenfleet’s Board, I am constantly reminded of the deep responsibility we have—not only to act on climate but also to listen to and learn from Australia’s First Nations peoples, the world’s longest-standing land managers. Earlier this year, Greenfleet staff had the privilege of joining Mark Koolmatrie, a proud Ngarrindjeri elder, at our Bull Creek property in South Australia. Mark graciously welcomed them and our supporters to Country and reflected on the difference a year can make when restoring native ecosystems. His insights into Ngarrindjeri Country and the importance of restoring native forests were both humbling and inspiring. At Bull Creek, Greenfleet is restoring 14 hectares of land with locally native species, creating vital ecological connections to the nearby Cox Scrub Conservation Park. On a recent visit, we planted Desert Banksia (Banksia ornata) and Silver Banksia (Banksia marginata) to help support pygmy possum populations. Mark is also the owner of Kool Tours, where visitors can explore the rich history and knowledge of Ngarrindjeri Country through authentic cultural experiences. At Greenfleet, we firmly believe that climate action and reconciliation go hand in hand. As we work to restore native ecosystems, we remain committed to listening to and partnering with First Nations voices to ensure our work honours the land, its history, and its future. Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS) are critical to achieving Big Chalk’s vision of nature-rich chalk and limestone landscapes that benefit all of us. They’re central to building a nature recovery network that will halt nature’s decline by 2030 and ensure nature is at the heart of local decision-making. The West of England LNRS is the first to be published and it overlaps significantly with Big Chalk, including parts of the Cotswolds and Mendip Hills National Landscapes and the important limestone landscapes in between. We’re really pleased to see species-rich grasslands are a priority for the West of England LNRS, as well as the West of England Nature Partnership's Grassland Connections programme. This focus on restoring and improving connectivity between grasslands will help ensure species can move as their climate envelopes shift. This is just the beginning. At Big Chalk, we want to see more LNRSs across southern England recognise the importance of our globally significant chalk and limestone habitats and align their priorities across boundaries- there are 26 local strategy areas within Big Chalk. By working together, we can enhance the health and resilience of these essential ecosystems. We’re proud to be working with these catalysts for nature's recovery locally and look forward to seeing more strategies published.
