Joining the university's private equity club was one of the best decisions I made in college! “Why did you decide to do your MBA?” 👇 I founded my first company at 21, then had the opportunity to operate at amazing companies like On Deck. But I knew there were still gaps I wanted to fill. Now a year into my MBA, and nearing the end of my Summer VC internship at SOSV, I have even more clarity around why I am so grateful I decided to do go to Columbia Business School: 1️⃣ Discovering the Unknown Unknowns: Starting a company young, I was learning on the fly—literally building the plane while flying it. But I knew there were gaps in my knowledge. Columbia’s core curriculum and my classmates’ diverse career journeys helped me go back to my foundation and strengthen it from the ground up. 2️⃣ Intentional Career Pivot & Changes: I’ve always been around the VC world, as a founder / startup operator, but my MBA gave me the freedom to dive in fully. Combining classroom knowledge with hands-on experience at SOSV, I now see the startup world from both the builder's and investor's perspectives. I have been lucky to be able to build skillsets and networks on both sides of the table. 3️⃣ Unparalleled Student Learning & Career Opportunities: As a student, doors open wider. Mentors are more eager to help / are more receptive to cold messages. Plus, when else can you try out internships in entirely new fields? These hands-on experiences can be game-changers. 4️⃣ Inspiring Alumni Network: Columbia alumni are everywhere in NYC - unique to Columbia many alumni stay in the same city post-grad. They join our events since we're just a train away and I've even run into them in the elevator in my building! Wherever they are, whether they're fund managers, investors, founders, consultants, or bankers, they’re always willing to share insights and stop for a chat - making the alumni network incredibly valuable. 5️⃣ Building Lifelong Friendships: Sure, networking is great, but I'd be remiss if I didn't highlight the close friendships we've built, even after knowing each other for only one year. These aren’t just professional connections; they’re lifelong bonds with people who share your ambitions and values. 6️⃣ Global Exposure: Traveling has been a huge part of our experience together. Exploring the world with my peers in Japan, Jamaica, Colombia, etc., has built lasting relationships, unforgettable memories, and cultural understanding. 7️⃣ Motivating Environment to Create: Pre-MBA, I felt stagnant. But being surrounded by ambitious peers in a city like New York has definitely reignited my fire to build. Seeing friends make big moves daily keeps my wheels turning — Founder Diaries is just the start. Big things to come... I'm incredibly thankful to everyone who has helped shape my #MBA experience into what it has become, for the opportunity to dive into #VC and support the growing #NYC startup ecosystem, and for the ability to just have fun while doing it all. Looking forward to another year of great adventures :)
