💡 Innovation vs. Strategy: What Really Drives Great Design? Let’s be honest—everyone wants their product or brand to be innovative. It’s the “next big thing,” the game-changer, the “wow” moment. But here’s the hard truth: innovation alone isn’t enough. Design innovation is the seed, full of potential. But without strategy—the soil, water, and sunlight—it never grows. And yet, how often do we see brands obsess over planting seeds while neglecting the conditions needed for them to thrive? Here’s the real question: Are we too focused on chasing bold ideas and forgetting the strategy that makes them happen? At the end of the day, it’s not just about being innovative—it’s about making innovation real, tangible, and impactful. If you’re looking to take your big idea and make it thrive, let’s talk. I specialize in helping brands turn innovative sparks into strategic successes. 👉 What do you think: Should design teams focus more on the spark or the soil? Let’s discuss! Are Next-Gen Material Startups Really Deprioritizing Fashion? This Vogue Business article suggests that next-gen material startups are moving away from fashion. While it’s true that some startups may shift focus, the real conversation should be about scalability challenges — not the industry itself. Fashion is a massive industry where sustainability can have significant impact, but the barriers to scaling bio-based materials, whether in fashion or any other sector, are largely the same. From securing supply chain consistency to ensuring performance at scale, the roadblocks we face are universal across industries. Stating that fashion doesn’t provide the volume of demand to significantly increase novel material production capacity is incorrect. The harsh reality is that many emerging materials are perceived as inferior in comparison to incumbent materials, starting with performance. Shifting to industries like automotive with higher standards will only slow down adoption. Rather than shifting focus, the key is to understand these barriers and work to overcome them. Innovators, manufacturers, and industry leaders need to collaborate on solving the scalability issue, not just for fashion, but for all sectors seeking sustainable solutions. At Evoco, we aim to meet our brand partners where they are in the sustainability journey, not where we would want them to be. With scalable, performance-based technology and transparent sustainability metrics that allow us to address our customers' needs in multiple industries. #Sustainability #BioBasedMaterials #FashionInnovation #NextGenMaterials #CircularEconomy #Scalability #Collaboration https://lnkd.in/grpSP5_B

We march backwards into the future. Why does innovation so rarely succeed? You know the kind of innovation I'm talking about, the kind of leaps forward that make people nervous. There's obvs a gazillion reasons, but the biggest is because we judge the leaps of innovation through our most recent past. As the acerbic Marshall McLuhan said "We look at the present through a rear-view mirror. We march backwards into the future. Suburbia lives imaginatively in Bonanza land" What does that mean for Underdogs? Research from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute looked 83k new product launches over an 8 year period. They showed 80% of new products had failed within 2 years. And a big chunk of those new products are versions of existing products, from large brands. So your odds of success are close to zero; yep even you with your Retro inspired outdoor clothing brand recycled from Bamboo and Papaya Extract. So what can you change today to improve your chances? Innovation is sexy, but nostalgia is powerful. Pull at the public’s nostalgic heart strings and your mad invention might just succeed. Looking backwards is the key to innovation. Underdog brands, need Underdog thinking

Innovation and creativity thrive in the hands of those who see beyond the ordinary, transforming discarded materials into new and imaginative creations. This approach not only breathes new life into what others consider waste but also exemplifies a sustainable and visionary mindset. Imagine an owner, surrounded by piles of old and scrapped materials—metal pieces, worn-out fabric, broken wood, and forgotten treasures of yesterday. Instead of seeing these items as useless, they become the raw materials for a journey of innovation. Each piece is carefully examined, its potential unlocked through creativity and skill. The process begins with a vision—a mental blueprint of what could be. Old metal scraps are welded and shaped into sculptures that defy convention, blending form and function in surprising ways. Worn-out fabric finds new purpose as vibrant patchwork designs, creating eclectic tapestries that tell stories of resilience and reinvention. Even broken wood is meticulously crafted into furniture that whispers tales of history while embracing modern aesthetics. The owner's workshop becomes a sanctuary of transformation, where creativity flourishes and craftsmanship reigns supreme. Here, the boundaries between art and utility blur, as each piece crafted from reclaimed materials becomes a testament to human ingenuity and environmental stewardship. Beyond mere recycling, this process is an ode to resourcefulness—an affirmation that innovation knows no bounds when guided by imagination. It challenges conventional notions of value and beauty, proving that true creativity lies in the ability to see potential where others see only discard. Moreover, the impact extends far beyond the workshop walls. Each creation becomes a conversation starter, prompting reflections on sustainability and the power of individual action. It inspires others to rethink their own consumption habits and embrace the possibilities of upcycling and repurposing. In conclusion, innovation and creativity at their best are exemplified by the transformation of old and scrapped materials into new and imaginative items. This process not only celebrates human creativity but also champions sustainability and environmental responsibility. It reminds us that in every discarded piece lies an opportunity for reinvention—a chance to create something beautiful, meaningful, and enduring out of what was once considered lost.
