Museums that prioritize visitor experience aren't being human-centered — they're designing for people like themselves. Who wants a great visitor experience at a museum? Museum professionals or people who are at home in museums. Everyone else is there for other reasons. Experience is valuable to the extent that it supports the person's goals — an extraordinary experience, as defined by subject matter experts, may only be a distraction. This is why Directors of Visitor Experience in museums will one day be called Directors of Visitor Progress.

Following the recent publication of the 2023 admission figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, Richard Huntrods our Director of Audiences, Research, and Insights shares his thoughts: “It was great to see audiences return to some of my favourite organisations in the 2023 figures published by ALVA last week – attendances jumping up by almost 20% on 2022. This is no doubt due to the huge post-pandemic upswing in international visits last year (up by over 6 million on 2022) and the innovative programming and marketing efforts. Whilst the growth is great news, figures remaining significantly behind 2019 attendances and reflect similar trends seen in the number coming from DCMS sponsored museums and galleries – still down 27% on 2018/19. Interestingly, these figures contrast markedly with the performing arts, where factors including the desire for a sense of community and shared immersive experiences are helping West End and live experiences of all kinds hit record numbers across the UK.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Being free is not the same as being welcoming. Some free and low-admission organizations treat their admission strategy as the near-entirety of their audience expansion efforts. However, free admission organizations do not have notably different audiences than paid-admission organizations. Just because something is free doesn’t mean people who don’t have interest (perhaps because they feel unwelcome) will do it. We see time and time again that free admission is not a foolproof audience expansion strategy with reliably positive impacts on welcoming perceptions. Being perceived as welcoming requires strategy, effort, thoughtful programing, prioritization and – often – investment. It’s not as simple as putting a ‘free’ sign on the door.” From “Cost and Value: Are Museum & Performing Arts Tickets Worth It?” by Colleen Dilenschneider [subscription required to read] https://lnkd.in/eS5EF7p5 #SweibelArts #Ticketing #AudienceStrategy
