Following the recent publication of the 2023 admission figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, Richard Huntrods our Director of Audiences, Research, and Insights shares his thoughts: “It was great to see audiences return to some of my favourite organisations in the 2023 figures published by ALVA last week – attendances jumping up by almost 20% on 2022. This is no doubt due to the huge post-pandemic upswing in international visits last year (up by over 6 million on 2022) and the innovative programming and marketing efforts. Whilst the growth is great news, figures remaining significantly behind 2019 attendances and reflect similar trends seen in the number coming from DCMS sponsored museums and galleries – still down 27% on 2018/19. Interestingly, these figures contrast markedly with the performing arts, where factors including the desire for a sense of community and shared immersive experiences are helping West End and live experiences of all kinds hit record numbers across the UK.”

💡 How to reconcile hospitality, openness with a written museum's visit policy and safety standards? ➡ How to explicitly incorporate certain essential points (which ones?) while avoiding creating a list of "do nots"? ➡ What are the essential and regulatory points to express explicitly, while avoiding a series of injunctions and "do nots"? ➡ How to deconstruct a list of presupposed prohibitions internalized, especially by those furthest from the culture (expected attitudes...)? How to explain the reasons behind certain prohibitions rather than imposing them? 🌐 Do you know of successfull examples of museums that have worked on this issue, whether in terms of signage within the museum, visit policies or welcome guidebook ? 🙏 Share your inspiring examples! #MuseumInnovation #CulturalHospitality #inclusivemuseum La Lucarne Mêtis MuseumNext ICOM FRANCE Anne-Sophie Marchal Anne Sophie Grassin Annie Bicknell Lieko Lelong Lucie Marinier Terry Scott Anne Fay Frederic Bigo

Mumbling ''yeah, you know, digital performing arts, digital museums, it's cool'' was always easy and trendy. But how do we ensure that we include as many people as possible? Digitalisation does not mean equality. Glad to moderate an inspiring panel, tomorrow in Madrid, within the framework of the ''Summit of Engaged Digital Citizenship''. 💚 Our virtual conference on Museums and sustainability takes place online in a little over a week. National Museums Scotland is one of the organisations taking advantage of the opportunity to bring the latest thinking from museums around the globe to their institution. Their Green Advocates Group are dedicated to making the museum more sustainable, so they have quickly signed up 25 staff to attend the event. They'll be hearing how Museums from Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Australia have acted to become more sustainable. If you want to make museums greener, why not start a Green Advocates Group in your museum? Bringing colleagues together to tackle environmental issues? #Museums #Museum #MuseumNext

Did you know there are approximately 104,000 museums worldwide. Museums serve as more than mere showcases for objects; they also act as vital drivers of the creative economy at local and regional levels. Museums are also increasingly present in the social sphere, acting as platforms for debate and discussion, tackling complex societal issues and encouraging public participation. Discover how we're championing their cause: https://lnkd.in/esjbEUnS

Museums that prioritize visitor experience aren't being human-centered — they're designing for people like themselves. Who wants a great visitor experience at a museum? Museum professionals or people who are at home in museums. Everyone else is there for other reasons. Experience is valuable to the extent that it supports the person's goals — an extraordinary experience, as defined by subject matter experts, may only be a distraction. This is why Directors of Visitor Experience in museums will one day be called Directors of Visitor Progress.

A realistic and rather thorough set of comments/suggestions from the perspective of the vast majority of museums — although small in size, they represent a large contribution to the cultural life of our nation. Often, these are hidden jewels that add to not only rural settings but major cities where their presence shines and preserves unique perspectives. The failure to address these inherent characteristics of small museums, may often result in tragic outcomes: https://lnkd.in/gEv2zW67

How do you see museums fulfilling their role as educational, cultural, and preservation institutions in your community? How does fulfilling this role foster trust from your community? Public trust is fundamental to the mission of museums. Museums preserve natural and cultural resources for public benefit, ensuring that collections are accessible for study, enjoyment, and learning. According to the American Alliance of Museums Code of Ethics, museums in the United States are grounded in the tradition of public service, holding their collections and information as a benefit for those they serve. Museums must uphold the highest levels of accountability and transparency to maintain this trust. Key standards include responsible stewardship of resources, identifying and serving community needs, inclusivity, educational commitment, and compliance with legal standards. This is a high bar to clear and an important pillar in our local, state, national, and international communities. When we approach exhibits, we keep this tenant in mind and design in a way that benefits and best serves the interests of every visitor, whose collective trust is critical to the mission and future of museums. 📷 "This is Richmond, Virginia" at The Valentine #exhibitdesign #exhibitiondesign #exhibitdesigners #exhibitiondesigners #trustinmuseums #Americanmuseums #museums #communityresource

Museums and galleries are magical portals to history, culture, and imagination. But as we bring these experiences online, are we including everyone? We still have a long way to go with accessibility for Blind visitors. Did you know that 64% of museum homepages have missing alt text and 88% of museum social media accounts rely on basic AI-generated descriptions? Missing these steps in workflows hinders inclusive access to our rich history and art. Check out my most recent article on Robert Weisberg's Museum Human to learn about the best next steps museums can take to build a legacy of accessible media for Blind patrons, from conducting audits to securing executive support and hiring expert consultants. We have everything we need to make museums the inclusive and welcoming spaces they were always meant to be. Let's build a digital legacy of inclusive access and break down barriers to history, art, and culture once and for all.
