We are thrilled to host our first-ever Montgomery County Public Schools #SummerRise High School student interns this year! A heartfelt thanks to the MCPS Department of Partnerships for this incredible opportunity for both the students and host organizations. We had our first in-person gathering with the high school interns at the REI Systems Sterling last week. The day was filled with fun and learning. Students enjoyed lunch with REI leadership, listened to inspiring speakers, interacted with our #FDA account's top architects and program managers, and toured the office. We are honored to support this initiative and proud to play a part in building our future generations! #REIsystemsLIFE #FDA #students #interns

Okay, CSLD hasn't posted in a while, so what's up with the pic of the large field? A lot, actually. The large field at our North Woods Challenge Course is finally getting a much-needed layer of mulch and our staff are excited. You see, once students graduate, we don't get the summers off. CSLD Coordinator Alison Jackson Frasier is usually on the course facilitating teambuilding for groups or focusing on maintenance. The work doesn't end! What else does CSLD do over the summer? 🌞 End-of-year reports/budget things, you know, the fun stuff 🌞 New Student Orientation: lots and lots of talking with new students and families/supporters 🌞 Still teaching: We're here for our LDR 417 Internship students 🌞 Still facilitating: We have several #CliftonStrengths workshops lined up for other departments' professional development needs in the coming months 🌞 Always planning: Things like Leadership Institute Peer Leader Training and the schedule for the full program ... reserving space for our fall Day of Leadership ... and making lists for "future us" (we'll get to fall class planning by August, for sure) 🌞 And yes, our staff take some time off as well, to rest and recharge. We wholeheartedly believe naps are productive. How's everyone's summer so far?

Joseph Steigerwaldt, a senior in finance, has dedicated his last three years to being a student leader, helping those around him succeed. 👏 Joseph serves as a Business Learning Team (BLT) peer mentor, helping incoming first-year students transition successfully into Ivy. He excitingly said, "The most rewarding part has been witnessing my mentees thrive professionally. From internship acceptance posts on LinkedIn to gaining leadership roles across Ivy and campus organizations, seeing my mentees grow from their freshman year has been exciting to watch." #NationalMentoringMonth

Young Men of Talent — Ensuring college degrees and workplace readiness for Black and Brown males. After a successful launch in the 2023-24 school year, the Young Men of Talent (YMT) partnership among CFES Brilliant Pathways, the University of Vermont, and community/business leaders is ready to build on its success in the 2024-25 school year. How does it work? YMT assists Black and Latino male students by providing academic, social, and professional networks that provide formal and informal mentoring, advice, and encouragement. Business and education leaders hold regular virtual and in-person meetings with YMT Scholars and help them obtain paid summer internships in their fields of interest. Older students who have recently navigated similar challenges serve as relatable mentors to younger peers. YMT students receive priority registration for college classes and preferential choice in academic advisors. To help them establish connections and build community, students also attend monthly dinners hosted by academic and corporate leaders. While the data is encouraging, it can’t begin to capture the program’s true impact. YMT has not only provided resources and support, but has fostered genuine excitement among participating students. They experienced firsthand that many people in academic and business circles care deeply about their success. See the full report on CFES Brilliant Pathways and the YMT program at https://lnkd.in/e4sv6X5W. Global leader CFES Brilliant Pathways, based in Essex, N.Y., has been helping underserved K-12 students from rural and urban communities become college and career ready for over 33 years. I had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the GlobalMindED conference this week GlobalMindED is a dynamic and inclusive community focused on taking practical steps to develop a diverse talent pipeline for minority learners and job seekers. This organization unites influential figures from education, business, government, and non-profits, all with a shared commitment to expanding access and opportunities for first-generation college students, low-income or underrepresented, in educational and career settings. What made this annual event so unique? ▫ 73% of our speakers come from diverse backgrounds. ▫ Most attendees are diverse leaders and allies who advocate for inclusive leadership. ▫ Our audiences come from all backgrounds and bring an equity lens. ▫ Around 20% of our attendees are first-generation and diverse students. ▫ GlobalMindED ensures student representation by featuring them on the majority of panels. ▫ The Industry Marketplace/Career Exploration provides businesses with opportunities to connect with diverse talent for apprenticeships, internships, and job placements. ▫ The conference also hosts an Inclusive Leader Awards dinner, which celebrates DEI luminaries and serves as a platform for recognizing role models in the industry.

Hi network, Today, I attended the Young Professionals' Black Leaders of the Future event at Leicester Square, London. It was hosted by Dan M. and featured many senior managers and apprentices from global firms, whom I was honored to engage in enlightening conversations with. This was my first solo networking event, and it was slightly daunting; however, I'm extremely grateful to have overcome this feeling, having received vast insight as well as motivation to keep going with my apprenticeship process. Below are 5 invaluable points I took from today that may enlighten your thought process: 1)Stay true to yourself during any application process; employers can tell when a candidate is trying to project a certain personality. 2)"It's not who you know; it's who knows you." - This emphasises the importance of being known by others rather than just knowing influential people. 3)"When you tell a powerful story, you have the power to paint a captivating story in someone's mind." 4)Think big, start small, move fast! 5)Reframe failure into "What have I learned?" Turn your failure into action. #networkingevent #careerdevelopment

Are you a 2024 high school graduate? (I know a good number of pre-college students I've had the good fortune of meeting over the years are here on Linked In!) Do you know a 2024 high school graduate? This is a really cool opportunity for someone who is not planning to start college this fall to start charting your own course, with support and mentorship from some truly amazing people (including the incredible Mia Birdsong, whose book I am giving to students again this summer, it's that good). It sounds like the best kind of messy to me - the kind where you've rolled up your sleeves to make something, and you don't know exactly what it's going to look like or how it's going to go, but you know the process is fun and what comes out of it could be amazing. Those are my words. In The Flight School's own words: "...think of us as the scaffolding around whatever you choose to do during the year after high school. Whether it’s a job, an internship, creative projects, or travel, we’re here to help you make it count. Through the Fellowship, you’ll get a community, coaching, and courses designed to make this year not just a transition, but a transformation. We’ll help you find your people, your purpose, and your power to drive change — before making huge decisions about the rest of your life." https://lnkd.in/eTM2QJvm
