Last Saturday two of our co-organizers - Marta Guimarães and Luís Espírito Santo - made their presence felt at Demo Day from the Center for Responsible AI. The event featured a captivating keynote by the Responsible AI specialist Prof. Virginia Dignum and another insightful keynote by the neuroscientist Prof. António Damásio. The highlight was a thought-provoking debate between Prof. Damásio and Prof. Arlindo Oliveira on the nature of consciousness - available here: https://lnkd.in/dfiKr7sD We could finally have a look at how the centre operates: by product pods. Each pod brought together a diverse set of stakeholders: including - industry leaders, that provide challenges and applications; - startups, that innovate and guide the product development; - research centres, which are the main force in fundamental research and pushing forward the technological boundary. The live demos were nothing short of impressive, showcasing innovations in tele-rehabilitation, silent communication using neural interfaces, knowledge discovery, neurofeedback for stress relief, tone and cultural-aware translation, automation auditing, data augmentation, and more. Those were brought to life by startups including: Unbabel, Sword Health, Priberam, EMOTAI, NeuralShift, Visor.ai, Automaise, YData and Youverse. Joint PhD Student on Machine Learning and Computational Creativity at University of Coimbra and Vrije Universiteit Brussel
It was very interesting to listen to a very nicely put-together argument for embodiment as a requisite for consciousness! Prof. António Damásio brought several interesting points to a discussion on consciousness in machines. His debate with Arlindo Oliveira was super interesting, and it is also interesting to notice the same arguments being mentioned: the Chinese room, the philosophical zombie... I got fond of the idea brought by Arlindo Oliveira during the debate, which was based on his conversations with Mario Figueiredo: consciousness is approached by several fields in different ways, and this might mean that it is a spectrum of aspects that include the embodied aspect, the feeling aspect, the volitional aspect, the self-narrative aspect, the social aspect, the meta-cognition aspect... The idea that we can create things that match some, but not all, of these aspects is interesting. I think this is actually the main point being discussed in discussions about the ghost in the machine! While some might believe that it is possible to partially simulate these aspects and that would count as a different levels of consciousness, others might think that these aspects all arise from a special implementation of a certain information processing structure - the only considered consciousness. In this last possibility, we consider those parts, those aspects, to be only symptoms of a deeper implementation and any partial simulation of these would fall into the pit of the Chinese room argument. In the middle of nomenclature discrepancies, classic arguments, and ideas for galaxy exploration, this was the main takeaway for me, mainly because I haven't heard (or at least I can't remember) any nice arguments supporting any of these hypotheses. (Maybe I can remember one...) But I would be happy to hear some if you have it!😉

What can you do with GenAI? What will GenAI do with you? Last year, we started pioneering the Prompt-A-Thon™️ event format to invite people to explore how to solve complex problems with #GenAI. By now, we have replicated this type of event with many different groups in research, education, business, and administration. The participants hone their #GenAI skills and we have been given the opportunity to record research data on how people use #GenAI and how they react to #GenAI results in a process of problem solving. So the event format is both an approach for #GenAI capability building as well as for research data collection on #GenAI. Emir Kucevic presented today our first publication on the Prompt-A-Thon™️ format at the #HICSS conference. The link to the paper will follow in the comments. A great team worked together on this publication: Emir Kucevic, Constantin von Brackel-Schmidt, Tom Lewandowski, Stephan Leible, Lucas Memmert, all of University of Hamburg.

Well that was one interesting day starting with CogX Festival to swat up on the possibilities and dangers of Generative AI… Moving on to techUK to their inaugural Health and Care Summit to discuss the opportunities and challenges of implementing AI and broader digital tech in the NHS and life science industry… Great panel session with Tamir Singer from the NHS, James Alford from GSK and Stephen Jowett from IQVIA. Superbly curated by Alex Lawrence . And ending with a cheeky question to the exiting National Director of Transformation at NHSE. Thank you organisers for the always excellently curated and cerebrally challenging #cogxfestival. Both Yuval Noah Harari and Tristan Harris painted a rather bleak picture of the GPT genie out of the bottle and the need to act fast to implement species-saving controls but had some really sensible, pragmatic approaches to do just that. “It seems probable that once the machine thinking method had started, it would not take long to outstrip our feeble powers. They would be able to converse with each other to sharpen their wits. At some stage therefore, we should have to expect the machines to take control.” Alan Turing 1951 The pace of technological change is genuinely phenomenal and it’s not surprising that the healthcare system with its legacy delivery chassis cannot manage the rapid adoption that may seem like a no brainer to everyone. I’m personally excited by what I think is a solvable challenge and the step change in global health that it can deliver. Bring it on! #AI #generativeAI #cogX #tech4good #techuk #healthtech #dataanalytics #nhs

"Cutting through the noise: Putting GenAI to work in 2024" - sign up for our She Breaks the Law session this Friday 26 Jan - limited places still available! 2023 will be remembered as the year where GenAI was EVERYWHERE: on the news, in every tech-related conversation, and top of every conference agenda. But what does it mean in 2024 and how are we actually putting it to use? Following on from Suzanna Kalendzhian’s excellent sessions on both AI theory and prompt engineering in 2023, the #SBTL community is coming together this Jan to reflect on what we've learned and where next. Joining our lovely NOO aka Nicola Jones on this session are two other awesome #lawbreakers I've known for a long time - Julie Saliba, Chief Innovator at Echo.Legal, and Lynn MacKay, Associate Director of Innovation & Practice Solutions at Proskauer. They will all be sharing and inviting participants to share the highs, the lows and the lessons learned of the journey so far, including, some: 🚫Don’t try this at home! Cautionary tales and practical take-aways 💎Diamonds in the rough: unexpected discoveries Save your place here: https://lnkd.in/eGjKEykk #SheBreaksTheLaw #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #WomenEmpoweringWomen #womeninai PS: it's heart-warming to see the growing enthusiasm and sharing of knowledge and expertise in the community on GenAI. Only regret, I can't join this session😢. As much as I want to - 11pm start is a tad bit too late even for me. But hope that most people in the UK-US timezones can attend...

CSO, Robotics, Autonomy, AI, Space & Non-Space, First of a Kind and Innovation Specialist, Executive Director.
AI and Robotics in Space 🚀 From Singapore to the Strand in London, AI and Robotics in Space Innovation and Space Exploration continues to be hot topic at the moment. Delighted to see a packed room and great online attendance for this #AIUK event last Friday - with a broad cross-section of interests ranging from investors to early stage careers. Questions covered a wide spectrum of topics including tech, law, science, ethics and medical challenges. There was a general interest in how we increase/accelerate/improve AI adoption in space whilst managing risks. Next generation tools for Robotics, AI and Autonomy in space (watch this CFMS space - no pun!) and careful regulation will all have a role to play. My thanks to Yang Gao for an excellent keynote to set the scene, my fellow panelists, Gunjan Sharma Andrew Coates, Pete Hodkinson and Tony Milligan and Dr Catherine Healy for fabulous organisation, keeping us all on track and Andy Bennett for helping to spread the word. Finally, it was great to catch-up with Andrew - hard to believe that we started our ExoMars and Rosalind Franklin journey back in 2002! PS: We are hiring ! #AI #space #spaceexploration #spacerobotics #Exomars #KCL #Turing #robotics #cfms
We had a packed room this evening with more attendees online for our event on AI in Space Innovation, as part of the AI UK Fringe by The Alan Turing Institute. We had a talk by Yang Gao followed by a fruitful discussion with our panellists Mark Woods Gunjan Sharma Andrew Coates Pete Hodkinson and Tony Milligan.
