We know how important it is for children, young people and families to have access to whole-of-family early intervention and prevention services. That’s why we’re working across Victoria to strengthen families, support healthy relationships, promote mental health and wellbeing, and prevent family violence. Our focus is on supporting clients with challenges they’re facing now, but also helping them to build skills and knowledge that will support them in the future. Similarly, a new Australian Human Rights Commission report calls for prevention and early intervention to stop our most vulnerable children from coming into contact with the child justice system. The Commission spoke with 150 young people and children, their families and a range of stakeholders who said that prioritising child wellbeing and safety would help keep children away from the criminal justice system. The report calls for governments to listen to the evidence and work together across health, education, social services and justice to improve child wellbeing and safety – and keep communities safe for everyone. URGENT: Protect Neurodivergent Children and Children with SEND from Abuse! As a passionate advocate for neurodiversity and Inclusion, I couldn’t believe what I was reading when I saw last weeks disturbing reports of abuse in special needs schools showcased a blatant violation of children's safety. Unfortunately after conversations and meetings with the community, this does not seem to be an isolated incident. This is a wake-up call to prioritise the safety of all children no matter their neurotype. These children are especially vulnerable, and the consequences of abuse can be devastating. Our public statement (attached document) calls for further thorough investigation, detailed review and stricter safeguards to prevent a tragedy like this from occurring again. We can't stay silent! 🔸Share this post and statement to spread awareness. 🔸Report suspected abuse to local authorities. 🔸Demand action from the government and department for education. 🔸Support organisations protecting vulnerable children. 🔸Advocate for stronger regulations in special needs education. We stand in solidarity. Together, let's shine a light on this darkness and build a safer future for all children. Comprehensive findings in recent publications by Daryl Higgins and Gabrielle Hunt identified a complex interplay of child, parental, and contextual factors associated with the maltreatment of children by their families. The authors identify key areas which could be targeted with support and parental education to reverse the trend. The research also highlights a variety of protective factors which keep children safe from harm. Structural or environmental factors play a key role in child safety. Housing instability and homelessness, single parent households, isolation, a lack of support for child rearing, and parental exposure to traumatic events such as war, or natural disaster are associated with experiences of child maltreatment and contact with a child protection service. See infographic below for a summary of the structural or environmental factors. We have created another infographic to represent individual factors such as child characteristics and parent characteristics [https://lnkd.in/gUdUHfWJ]. The theme for National Child Protection Week 2024 is Every Conversation Matters. But what does this mean? Conversations are powerful tools to keep children and young people safe and well. Conversations can help us understand issues, craft solutions, value community knowledge, and build the brains and social connections of children and young people. 🔹 Conversations between children and their caregivers matter (from the very earliest days) 🔹 Conversations between children and their peers matter 🔹 Conversations between families with teachers, doctors, and other professionals matter 🔹 Conversations between friends or neighbours matter 🔹 Conversations between decision-makers and the communities they serve matter Constable Care Foundation uses participatory approaches when delivering in-school safety and social education to children and young people. The Foundation's programs raise awareness, influence attitudes, and deliver real behaviour change, making a significant difference to the lives of children and young people across Western Australia.
