🌟 Introducing the HOPE Initiative 🌟
We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking collaboration between the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation (SLDF) and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) – the HOPE Initiative (Healthcare Opening Pathways to Equity).
This visionary project embodies a noble mission: to empower and guide young people from underrepresented backgrounds on their journey to successful careers in medicine and healthcare professions.
Over the next four years, the HOPE Initiative will serve as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change. Our holistic approach will inspire and facilitate more equitable access to healthcare careers, guiding students from secondary school through to the complexities of university applications.
Our goal? To level the playing field, remove barriers, and ensure equal opportunities for all. Through coaching, mentoring, and comprehensive support, we will empower young minds with essential skills, resources, and the confidence needed to thrive in healthcare careers.
Join us on this transformative journey as we pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future in healthcare. Together, let's turn hope into action. 💫

TUC Public Health Program, the only Public Health program in the nation with a concentration on navigating the complexities of health equity in marginalized communities, has started offering a new online course, Health Equity, and Criminal Justice Program!
"The idea with micro-credentials programs is that people get the chance to dip their toe into the degree. It's a bite-size way to explore something that you might have a real passion for, and it's lower commitment while you're still figuring out what your path is. This is one of the reasons we have leaned into the micro-credential," says Dr. Carinne Brody, Associate Program Director of Public Health Programs.

🍲 Food Insecurity: While some take food security for granted, millions struggle with hunger daily, underscoring the importance of addressing food inequity.
🕊️ Freedom Struggles: Freedom, a cornerstone of human rights, is denied to many across the globe, necessitating efforts to combat oppression and promote liberty for all.
🏥 Healthcare Challenges: Access to healthcare is unequal, with millions lacking basic medical services, highlighting the urgency of ensuring healthcare equity worldwide.

In January 2024 the Center conducted a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults to gauge levels of support for policies that, if implemented, would have a positive racial justice impact. Respondents were asked whether they were familiar with the concept of reparations, which was broadly defined.
The results showed that 66% of adults were familiar with the term. Those most acquainted with the concept had higher levels of education (82% of those with a postgraduate education were familiar) and earned higher incomes (79% of those familiar had annual incomes of more than $100,000 per year).
Reparations, even when broadly defined and not limited to cash payments, are not supported by the majority of the public, and the more time that has elapsed between a historical injustice and the proposed redress, the larger the ideological divide is on providing reparations.
To increase support for reparations, those committed to health and racial justice must do a better job of connecting the dots between historic injustice and modern-day inequity.
Other key findings include:
• Among the respondents that supported reparations, several believed that it was the “right thing to do” to address injustice, while others acknowledged the impact of slavery, its dehumanizing treatment of people as property or chattel, and the ongoing harms it caused.
• Among the respondents who opposed reparations, a common belief was that slavery occurred too long ago and so does not impact African American people today. Some also expressed that money is not the solution.
• Despite ideological differences, more than half of conservatives polled support policies in the California Reparations Report.

On the third day of community awareness, the focus shifted towards action and collaboration. The discussions centered around practical steps and initiatives that can be implemented to address the issues identified in the previous sessions. Key stakeholders, including local leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, and community members, came together to brainstorm solutions and develop a roadmap for the future.
Workshops and interactive sessions were conducted to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to advocate for their rights and access available resources. Special emphasis was placed on creating awareness about government schemes and programs designed to support education and health for marginalized communities.
The day concluded with a commitment from all parties to work together towards creating a more equitable and supportive environment.
