Exciting news alert! 📰 We have signed the contract for the main works for the Children’s Cancer Centre with our construction partner Sisk. We are full steam ahead with deconstruction of our old frontage building about to start. We are replacing this outdated building with our fantastic new Children’s Cancer Centre meaning our facilities will match our ambitions in cancer care and research. Alongside the amazing new cancer wards and daycare spaces, the new development also means we can: ⛏️ Create a new main entrance for the whole hospital 🔧 Provide extra space for our critical care, imaging and theatres services, all of which are essential for cancer care and treatment, but will also support all specialties across GOSH. 🛠️ Have a new bigger location for the hospital school We are thrilled to have made this significant step forward in achieving our ambitions of our new centre and we are grateful to Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity and everyone who has supported the Build It Beat It appeal which is making this development possible.

About us
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It aspires to offer outcomes for children in the top five in the world. The largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and, with UCLH it is the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, it works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK, and one of the largest in the world. The hospital at Great Ormond Street is the only exclusively specialist children's hospital in the UK. It does not have an Accident and Emergency department and largely only accepts specialist referrals from other hospitals and community services. The population of children served by the hospital is characterised by those with multiple disabilities and/or health problems and rare and congenital (present at birth) conditions.

Happy #InternationalLEGODay! Check out these amazing models on display in our Clinical Research Facility. They were made by our patients and families at the launch of the facility last year in its new home on the 8th floor of the Southwood Building. Astronaut Tim Peake joined us for the launch where he met with patients, families, staff and children from the GOSH nursery. 👩🚀 We were also joined by Steve McCarthy, the artist who designed the space themed artwork for the facility, in collaboration with patients and families. Tim and Steve ran Lego and colouring in sessions for our patients and families in the play area. The designs made on the day now form part of a permanent display in the facility. #Research #InternationalLEGODay #NationalLegoDay #LEGO

We will be bringing together clinicians including paediatricians, paediatricians-in-training, GPs, and allied health professionals (AHPs) from across the UK who are working to improve the lives of children and young people. 🤝 We’re looking forward to a day of talks and panel discussions covering gene therapy technologies, the long-term effects and latest advancements in gene therapy and how all this applies to paediatric care. 💡 A big welcome to everyone who will be joining us today! Could adapting our sinks help combat superbugs? We’ve all been there – you see something that isn’t perfect and you think “There must be a better way?” but most of the time we get caught up in what we are doing and never find that innovative solution. That’s not the case for Dr James Soothill, a Consultant in Microbiology at GOSH, who sought to solve the issue of superbug bacteria living in hospital sink plug holes. He recently worked with our Innovation and Business Development team to file GOSH’s first solely-owned patent application after he had an idea to reduce this issue. Read all about Dr Soothill's 'Tuba Drain' below - maybe coming to a sink near you soon... 👏💧 https://lnkd.in/esZRXrqh

Our researchers have found an increase in the number of children and young people admitted to acute medical wards because of a mental health concern. The study reported a 65% increase in the number of children and young people admitted in England between 2012 and 2022. Published in The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health journal, the new study is the first to analyse national trends in mental health admissions of children and young people to acute medical wards. Funded by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and the NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR GOSH BRC), researchers analysed data on all admissions of five to 18-year-olds to acute medical wards in England from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2022. 📢 Senior author, Dr Lee Hudson, consultant general paediatrician at GOSH and honorary senior lecturer at UCL GOS ICH, said: “Over the past decade, we've observed a significant rise in mental health admissions among children and young people to acute medical wards. Although there has been attention paid to increased referrals to community mental health services and inpatient mental health settings, admissions to general acute medical settings feels like a piece of the jigsaw missing in the story.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gKzUpTaB
