When a hurricane approaches and hits, EVERYTHING stops for a while, and in some cases, more than just a while ... Reports coming in are that the smallest Caribbean islands of Union Island (in the Grenadines), Carriacou and Petite Martinique (sister islands to Grenada), Tobago (sister island to Trinidad) and bigger island Barbados have gotten the brunt of Hurricane Beryl that bore down on the Eastern Caribbean this Monday morning… and that the same Beryl is headed for Jamaica and Cayman Islands. Lord have mercy! This is no time for self-promotion, but I hereby recommit to work I am part of at the Shridath Ramphal Centre for Int'l Trade Law, Policy and Services (https://lnkd.in/ekyaS5GC), the Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future Project, climate litigation and through other important initiatives, to bring trade rules and policies into alignment with the climate change agenda! My heart is breaking for my region. These painful reminders show that all of us—not just those in SIDS and climate-vulnerable economies—must work much harder to address the geographic and international governance systems (finance, trade, shipping) that cause and worsen these climate calamities. These disasters, and the threat of them, wreak havoc on our people and economies every year. The need for reform of the current system could not be clearer. Sending prayers up and best wishes out to all my colleagues, friends, MITP students and alum across the Eastern Caribbean. We will find ways to help but for the bigger lift, we will need more intention, clear-sighted focus, and all hands on deck! To provide assistance to Grenada, see comments below.
