Rethinking global trade for a sustainable future, address economic inequality, and advance sustainable development
About us
The Remaking Global Trade for a Sustainable Future Project aims to rethink the foundations for international commerce and develop a WTO reform agenda to better position this critical international organization to meet the needs of the current moment and better align the trading system with the world community’s commitment to a sustainable future. The Project will map out where the world needs to go over the next decade to address economic inequality, achieve the transition to a clean energy future, and advance other dimensions of the sustainable development vision – and specify what the trading system’s role should be in promoting the transformation required.

Always a pleasure to collaborate with my friends at the Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs (TESS) - here's my piece on WTO Reform as a catalyst for change, which draws on some of our work from the Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future. It's part of a compilation that will be launched at the WTO Public Forum in Geneva next week. When a hurricane approaches and hits, EVERYTHING stops for a while, and in some cases, more than just a while ... Reports coming in are that the smallest Caribbean islands of Union Island (in the Grenadines), Carriacou and Petite Martinique (sister islands to Grenada), Tobago (sister island to Trinidad) and bigger island Barbados have gotten the brunt of Hurricane Beryl that bore down on the Eastern Caribbean this Monday morning… and that the same Beryl is headed for Jamaica and Cayman Islands. Lord have mercy! This is no time for self-promotion, but I hereby recommit to work I am part of at the Shridath Ramphal Centre for Int'l Trade Law, Policy and Services (https://lnkd.in/ekyaS5GC), the Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future Project, climate litigation and through other important initiatives, to bring trade rules and policies into alignment with the climate change agenda! My heart is breaking for my region. These painful reminders show that all of us—not just those in SIDS and climate-vulnerable economies—must work much harder to address the geographic and international governance systems (finance, trade, shipping) that cause and worsen these climate calamities. These disasters, and the threat of them, wreak havoc on our people and economies every year. The need for reform of the current system could not be clearer. Sending prayers up and best wishes out to all my colleagues, friends, MITP students and alum across the Eastern Caribbean. We will find ways to help but for the bigger lift, we will need more intention, clear-sighted focus, and all hands on deck! To provide assistance to Grenada, see comments below. Thanks for the post Akima Paul Lambert #helpuswithclimatechange #tradeforclimate #heartbroken

I wear several hats on the topic of the intersection between trade and gender policy. I was privileged to have been invited to the inaugural Gender Equality Forum, hosted by UN Women, Caribbean Development Bank, Canada and others as a pre-event at the SIDS4 Conference on 25-26 May. I have penned some of my preliminary thoughts on the Forum in this SRC Trading Thoughts piece: https://lnkd.in/eHetx639 Thoughts? It was a delight to engage in a lively discussion on the "green squeeze" with ODI CEO, Sara Pantuliano, Prof Faizel Ismail, and Dr Jodie Keane. Our views ranged from the need to mitigate the burden of adjustment to new green trade measures including through finance; to the challenges being felt now by commodity exporters; to consideration of the many new trade and economic opportunities arising from the global green transition. We also reflected on the recently launched Villars Framework at ODI with E3G, alongside consideration of WTO reform.. take a moment and listen! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eCUi_qg8 #GreenTech #ClimateTrade #GlobalGovernance #ODI #E3G #ClimateChange #TechnologyTransfer #LDCs #WTO #UNFCCC Joel Trachtman Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future

Slightly embarrassed for this spotlight … but so grateful to our friends at @The Villars Institute for bringing much needed attention to the kind of issues small states face due to the changing climate. Thank you to The Villars Institute for your support of our @Remaking Trade Project, including providing us a wonderful space for some of our workshops; and lending us the name for our Villars Framework report on how trade should reformed to be more sustainable! We also were happy to host some of the Villars Fellows at our signature event in September last year and learn from them about how youth can contribute to our Project and sustainable trade!!!! Personally, I’ve also met so many news friends and powerful systems leaders at the Villars Institute events! St Lucian native and #VillarsExpert Jan Yves Remy, Director of the Shridath Ramphal Centre for Int'l Trade Law, Policy and Services (SRC), The University of the West Indies, knows first-hand how susceptible her island is to the ravages of climate change - and she’s using trade policy to try and alleviate it. In collaboration with Yale University Institute for the Environment and Tufts University, Remy is working on the Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future, encouraging governments, policymakers, and trade organizations to think creatively about how #TradePolicy should interact with other systems of governance and put the planet at the center of the #GlobalTradingSystem. We’re delighted to be working closely with Jan Yves Remy, Dan Esty, Joel Trachtman and the team on this important initiative, and for the active involvement of #VillarsFellows bringing the voice of young people to the conversations and recommendations published in the Villars Framework 2.0 (https://lnkd.in/dwuwSzzR). As WTO hosts its 13th Ministerial Conference, be inspired by Jan Yves Remy and her work on aligning #GlobalTrade with sustainable practices to halt #BiodiversityLoss and #ClimateChange #MC13 #BiodiversityLoss #ClimateChange #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #GlobalTrade #Agriculture #SystemsLeadership

This week I had the opportunity to participate on Remaking Trade For a Sustainable Future event at Georgetown University Law Center. The event was organized by Center on Inclusive Trade and Development co-led by Jennifer Hillman and Katrin Kuhlmann. It was an honor speaking on behalf of ECLAC at the Panel on "Trade and Inclusion: Leveraging Trade as Tool for Social Development" alongside Gregory Shaffer and Nita Rudra from Georgetown University, and Paula Tavares from the The World Bank. We discussed how the multilateral trade system can and should incorporate the social dimensions (labor, gender, indigenous rights, etc) as a core objective in order to support countries achieve the SDGs. The event was sold out and featured representatives from IDB, WB, ODI, USAID, Walmart, Silverado Policy Accelerator, etc. and also included presentations by USTR Ambassador Tai and two US Senators. Congrats to Trevor Sutton, Lillie Steinhauser, Valeria Frigeri and Mario R. Osorio Hernandez for a fantastic event! The Remaking Trade for a Sustainable Future is a project co-led by Dan Esty (Yale University), Joel Trachtman (The Fletcher School at Tufts University), and Jan Yves Remy (The University of the West Indies) and I've been fortunate to be part of it's steering committee. This week, we released our Villars Framework 2.0, an updated version of our initial report that reflects your comments, ideas, and feedback over the past 4 months! It's available here: https://lnkd.in/eeVkV84e As we head into the WTO's MC13 season, and as the world continues to think critically about how the trade system should engage with, and rise to the challenge and opportunities of the sustainability agenda, our Remaking Trade Project team continues to be champions for the trade system and agents for meaningful reform. This new version of the Framework refines our initial recommendations; includes a new Chapter on Social Dimensions of Sustainability; and features new textboxes from many stakeholders who have joined us on this journey. Thank you for traveling with us and we value your continued support! Please share our Project and VF 2.0 in your networks.
