In the past year, two juries ordered Acadia Healthcare and Universal Health Services to pay more than $1 billion after minors were raped in their care.⁠ ⁠ The names of investor-owned psychiatric hospital operators like Acadia and UHS have been tarnished by lawsuits and government settlements. But these providers are finding a new way to make money while keeping their names mostly hidden. They're joining forces with bigger nonprofits to build new hospitals to manage the surging number of people experiencing mental health emergencies in the United States. ⁠ ⁠ Nonprofit hospitals don’t have many good options for patients who come to their emergency rooms in a mental health crisis. With these joint ventures, they now have a place to send patients, and, as part-owners of the new hospitals, take a cut of the profit. The model also helps Acadia and UHS piggyback off the nonprofits’ strong local reputations. Addressing the dual challenges of housing insecurity and healthcare access is vital. Street medicine programs, like the one at Northwell Health, are crucial in delivering essential healthcare services directly to those experiencing homelessness. These programs go beyond traditional care, reaching people where they are—on the streets, in shelters, and other non-traditional settings. People experiencing homelessness often face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, from transportation issues to the stigma associated with their situation. This can lead to untreated conditions and preventable health crises. Street medicine bridges this gap by bringing compassionate, patient-centered care directly to them. The healthcare professionals involved are specially trained to address the unique needs of the unhoused, providing everything from routine medical care to mental health support with empathy and respect. Supporting these programs is not just about improving individual health outcomes; it’s about fostering healthier, safer communities. By investing in street medicine, we commit to healthcare equity, ensuring that even the most marginalized populations have access to the care they need. This investment also helps reduce the strain on emergency services and hospitals. Are you hysterical? Or are your health concerns routinely dismissed & ignored? Medical gaslighting occurs when healthcare professionals dismiss or trivialize a patient's symptoms, often leading to misdiagnosis or delayed treatment. Women, in particular, are disproportionately affected by this issue. Studies show that compared to men, women experience significantly longer wait times for diagnoses of critical conditions such as cancer and heart disease. Additionally, women are less likely to receive aggressive treatment for traumatic brain injuries and are often under-prescribed pain medications. This disparity not only underscores the prevalence of implicit biases in medical treatment but also highlights the urgent need for systemic changes within healthcare practices to ensure equitable and empathetic treatment for all patients.
