Attended a fantastic master class put on by AI Fund, the pitch doctor Matt W Gore, and Katherine Baird. Matt, who has helped founders raise over $2 billion from top VCs like A16Z, shared his expertise on avoiding common mistakes and creating compelling pitch decks. The event was enlightening and packed with actionable insights, including live deck reviews from three brave founders. Here are the 4 simple strategies Matt shared for crafting effective pitch decks: 1. Simple not precise: Capture the attention of VCs in the 12 seconds they spend per slide. Precision can take extra time, so keep it simple and impactful. 2. Show don't tell: Use your slides to show your product, not just logos and titles. Avoid decorative images that don't communicate anything and use photos on your team slides. 3. Say what you mean: Be clear and direct. Use headlines, not titles, and make your main points stand out. Matt transformed a slide titled "Cabs in 2008" to "Cabs Suck" with supporting evidence – a powerful example of clarity. 4. Tell a story: Think of your pitch as a story with a hero, conflict, and resolution. Engage your audience like you would around a campfire, not in a conference room. Thank you to Dimension’s Eric Dai and Min Joo Kim (Gladstone Institutes, Alix Ventures) for hosting us in a one-of-a-kind event! Most of the Biotech Start up panels tend to primarily host and feature more senior/experienced members of the community, therefore it was unique to hear from, and discuss with, first time founders, VC associates and transitioning academics. What venues can a first-time founder use to raise their first capital and how can a PhD/Post Doc break into VC? Ivana Muncie-Vasic (CEO&Founder at Vitra Labs) discussed how in the beginning of her journey, she was looking to raise money from everyone, everywhere all at once, but she quickly realized that knocking on the doors of VCs whose investment thesis was not relevant to the nature of her venture was not taking her far. What really changed things for her was to connect with other founders who had successfully raised their early-stage funding and who introduced her to their syndicates. Focus on finding VCs whose portfolio and your company are a natural fit and more importantly be part of the founders’ ecosystem who can introduce you to their own syndicates and communities. Similarly, Amee Kapadia (Cantos) discussed how investing in a founder who has been part of the ecosystem is more organic as it allows for a relationship of trust to evolve and a gradual due diligence process to take place. She also alluded to how we use the VC term as an umbrella term, but it is important to apply for VC positions at a firm where your skills (deeply technical, operational, consulting etc) will be appreciated. Last, but not least, Eric Dai put the most emphasis on the resonance of truth and the importance of finding unconventional truths in investing. ‘People try to cast their nets wide, but what’s more important is to find the few people who share the same values and truths with you so they will take a bet on you.’ #startup #vc #founder #earlycareer
