Not everybody is fit to commute. That doesn't mean they are not fit to work. 🧑🦽 👉🏻 Giving people from poor countries a chance to earn a good and honest salary. COVID brought on a revolution in how we can work remotely, forcing the world to adapt: we did it, we adapted, but now some people want to claw back the progress which was made. Remote and hybrid work opportunities involve creating a plan that works for you and your employer -- not JUST the employer. Your employees are happier when they have a work and shift balance that nurtures their lives and respects their restrictions. Some people may need 100% remote work, others partial remote or hybrid-office work, some may need different shifts and hours, and all of these choices are valid as long as the plan helps your employees to succeed. Remote and hybrid work also assists employees in cutting down on commute costs such as public transit fees, gas, car maintenance, insurance, and can even help get more cars off the road as people need them less to get to and from a job. As someone who is legally blind, remote work changed my life I can’t drive. It’s hard to describe just how challenging that makes everyday life. 1. 99% of America is designed for drivers. Sometimes intentionally to exclude non-drivers (common in wealthy areas). 2. If you go somewhere, either someone else needs to drive you, or you have to risk your life crossing a six lane highway, and spend time & energy walking many pounds of groceries home every day. I greatly appreciate everyone who has given me a ride before. Having to ask all the time though is quite embarrassing. 3. Alternatives to walking such as Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash are very expensive. I probably sacrificed 4 years of savings on this alone; I estimate $200,000 or more in lost wealth. One Uber with surge pricing will often cost $50-$100 for only one way. 4. Most jobs are located far away from city centers, since downtown real estate is an expensive place to build corporate parks. When you do live in a city center, it makes home ownership a far off dream. Best you can hope for is a 600 square foot condo for the rest of your life. Most people in cities like Seattle can drive, and live in places that are 2 hours walk, 15 minute drive from work. Yes, walking actually takes about 8 times longer, even in walkable cities. 5. Transit doesn’t actually save much time compared to walking, and it can be dangerous. I was a victim of an aggravated assault on my daily bus commute route many years ago. Remote work is the cure to all of these problems, since it allows people with disabilities to design the highly specialized and unique lifestyles that allow us to feel almost normal — almost is as close as I can hope to get. While the explosion in popularity of remote work has been a tremendous blessing, there remain several challenges for people with disabilities who choose this path: 1. The remote work market is very competitive. Someone who is legally blind has to get in line behind 500 applicants who are not. 2. HR systems are being designed to discourage people from remote work, because companies are having trouble convincing their entire workforce to go back to the office. Disabled employees risk getting caught in the drag net — they have a higher risk of getting laid off. This can happen either through intentional discrimination, or the kind of unintentioned discrimination that occurs when employment decisions are made on a spreadsheet that doesn’t capture why people are working remotely, just that they are. If a company is truly inclusive, it needs to consider the wellbeing of its employees who need to work remotely, even if it wants to bring some back into the office. That includes location independence: the city your HQ is in may not have a high standard of living for people with disabilities. I am thinking that small towns & cities actually hold the most opportunity for us.

There is a constant negative outlook towards remote workers, implying that everyone is trying to get out of work. I personally feel this is the sort of change that will enable offices to truly find the best, most fitting talent out there because we are not bound by borders or the ability to travel to an office. This can give people an opportunity to work for an honest wage in third world countries, to be able to work in an industry they want to, even though they may be disabled in a way that does not enable them to commute. These are just some of the factors that employers might be overlooking whilst thinking about remote work and one of the most important things to keep in mind is - that KPIs don't lie. Whilst working for TikTok I have had the incredible opportunity to stay in Croatia at times and continue to work and study and this has truly opened my eyes to the opportunity of remote work. At times I was communicating with numerous global teams, providing guidance and insights on how to further improve performance metrics, all whilst enjoying the ability to be close to my family, at home, without a single bump in the road. This only shows that businesses can operate on a hybrid basis. However, negative connotations related to remote work still keep us from being able to live full, successful lives at the locations where we are needed in our personal life (read as "we are able to have an amazing work-life balance") which results in better performance and overall happiness in "the office". Allowing people the freedom to work from home or hybrid is beneficial to many. For me personally, it comes down to needing to be in full time work, but wanting more time with my new baby as she develops and grows.. Getting to see her hit milestones I might miss if she is in the care of another.
