With only 8% of patients in academic sites and 4% in community sites on clinical trials, what can we do to increase access and enrollment? It’s a question that panelists at #AVBCC2024 explored during this morning’s session, “Evolution of Clinical Trial: So What’s Happening?” One topic that generated a lot of conversation was the idea of democratizing clinical trials. Some of the panel's ideas included streamlining information so it’s easier for providers to process quickly, better communication between the academic medical centers conducting the trials and the community-based practices, creating a collaborative culture among all stakeholders, taking an innovative approach to study designs, and adopting the idea that every patient is a research patient. Summarizing the conversation, moderator Howard Kraft, XO Health’s SVP of Market Engagement, shared the following: “All of us are absolutely committed to getting the best care for each individual in an equitable fashion. Chris O'Brien Lifehouse is committed to patient-focused research and that includes some unique projects led by our pharmacy department. Our Deputy Director of Pharmacy, Whiter Tang, recently presented a number of research posters at local conferences, highlighting some of the work being done to ensure we provide evidence-based care. Two of these research projects had a strong focus on patients. The first, a collaboration involving compassionate care advocate Caitlin Delaney, assessed the impact of a patient-centred training program for pharmacists and technicians. Some of the outcomes included increased positive patient interactions and a number of new initiatives to better support our patients. The second project, driven by soon-to-be pharmacist Imogen Bayliss-Smith, collected real-world evidence on a new cancer treatment, providing additional information reported in the pivotal clinical trial. This research identified some differences in treatment side effects and dosing changes, helping clinicians better understand how they can support patients receiving this treatment in the real-world setting. ** Can ePROs be the key to unlocking better clinical trial enrolment? ** Electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) could be a game-changer for recruiting patients to clinical trials, especially those focused on symptom management! A recent study by Nicholas Verdini and colleagues from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center found that using ePROs to identify patients with moderate or greater "cancer-related fatigue" and invite them directly to a trial led to significantly higher enrolment compared to the traditional referral method. Even better, using a referral service to send the invite worked just as well as the patient's primary oncology team, potentially easing the burden on busy physicians! ⚕️ This approach could also improve fairness in clinical trials by bypassing potential unconscious bias in physician-patient interactions. ⚖️ Intrigued?
