The 2024 European elections were characterised by a high voter turnout and intense political debates. Although in some countries, such as Germany and France, the extreme right had a strong result, overall, their gains were less than predicted and it would be an exaggeration to talk of a ‘right-wing surge’. In other words, this was not a good evening for Putin and Xi, because despite their best efforts, the political centre (EPP, S&D, and Renew) has held and will continue to build a pro-European majority.
