This session provided a deep dive into the foundational stages of battery development and the strategic planning necessary before a gigafactory can become operational. Rågstad began by explaining the essence of battery research and development (R&D). He articulated the intricate processes involved in pioneering battery technology, emphasizing that successful gigafactory operations hinge on robust R&D foundations. This part of his talk demystified the complex, often overlooked initial stages of battery production. Delving deeper, his presentation featured a unique segment titled "The Onion – From Product to Site Master Plan." Here, Rågstad used the onion metaphor to describe the layered approach to planning and execution in gigafactory projects. Each layer of the 'onion' represents a critical phase, from initial battery concept and product development to the detailed master planning of the manufacturing site. Pierre Rågstad's presentation was an eye-opener for many, shedding light on the critical pre-production phases that pave the way for gigafactories.
