What do mosquitoes, cockroaches and rats have in common ❔ Difficult to contain, hard to get rid of. WHO/Europe has identified 30 countries, mainly along the Mediterranean coast, but also stretching all the way into the Caucasus and beyond, that could potentially possess both the mosquito vector and favourable temperatures for the virus transmitting dengue to survive. On #WorldMosquitoDay, we celebrate our colleagues, partners, stakeholders and the local communities driving the fight against the mosquito, the world’s deadliest animal, working with urgency to co-develop new solutions in the fight against #dengue, #malaria, #Zika, #chikungunya and other vector-borne diseases. With the rise of invasive species & a warming planet, new tools to combat disease-spreading mosquitoes are more needed than ever. Half of all humans are threatened by Aedes aegypti, which spreads #dengue, and #malaria cases are on the rise again. Our global teams are working around the clock to develop and implement solutions against disease-spreading mosquitoes that threaten billions of people globally, including Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which transmit dengue, Zika and chikungunya, and Anopheles stephensi and Anopheles albimanus, two regionally dominant malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. MOSQUITO DAY 2024 Every August 20th, we celebrate World #Mosquito Day. August 20th highlights the importance of #preventing and #fighting against mosquitoes, vectors of serious diseases like #malaria. The female Anopheles mosquito is the species primarily responsible for transmitting malaria, a potentially deadly disease that affects many regions of the #world. The World Mosquito Day reminds us of the urgency to raise awareness, adopt preventive measures, and implement effective #vector #control programs to protect the most vulnerable populations. Together, we can contribute to reducing the impact of mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit.

Mosquitoes require only an inch of standing water to lay eggs. But just because you don’t have a pond or water source near your yard doesn’t mean your property is immune from a mosquito infestation. Consider water that pools in flower pots after a rainstorm, collecting around leaky spigots, hoses, kiddie pools, gutters -- any spot where water can accumulate at all is a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes. Insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets have been distributed as a tool to reduce risk of malaria disease. Reports show that some recipients instead use the nets for fishing. RP’s GHD team aimed to understand if this practice depletes fish stocks and can lead to food insecurity. How prevalent is this? Our findings suggest that mosquito net fishing (MNF) is not widespread, practiced by an estimated 0.6% of the total African population (with large confidence interval up to 5% of people). It’s plausible that MNF may lead to overfishing, but without robust quantitative evidence, we couldn't determine the degree of impact.
