Exciting News! Gen Z has spoken and Google has been dethroned as the go-to platform for finding local businesses. According to a recent report from SOCi, Instagram (67%) and TikTok (62%) are now the top choices for Gen Z when it comes to discovering local shops and stores to visit in-person. But fear not, Google still maintains a strong hold as the preferred local search engine among older generations. It's fascinating to see how social media is reshaping the way we explore and choose businesses in our local communities. #SocialMediaTrends #GenZPower #Instagram #TikTok #socialmedia #GenZDiscoveries #SocialMediaChoices

Gen Z's browsing habits are different than those of us born before. We've known this for a while, but there's consistently surveys and studies coming out that sheds light on how the younger generation searches differently than us and our older relatives. About a year ago, I read how it was estimated that maybe 60% of Gen Z used Google as their primary search engine. Now, and for the first time, it's no longer a majority of Gen Zers who opt for Google as their first pick when it comes to search. According to an Axios study, only 46% of 18–24-year-olds use Google as their primary / first choice of search engine. While Google is still the largest platform by market share, the platform that takes up the biggest chunk after that is TikTok at 21%. While the numbers for Instagram weren't listed, I feel pretty confident that it's also up there eating away a chunk of search real estate. Why is this interesting? 1. For a lot of us in marketing, it might be tempting to think that the search tools and habits that we have are the same for our younger audiences. That's increasingly becoming not the case. 2. I'm certain that a ton of businesses see SEM as being exclusively about Google. But if they market to younger audiences only on that platform, they're likely missing more than 50% of their audience in early touch points. 3. This makes things in the search space really interesting and possibly volatile, considering the ongoing possibility of TikTok being banned in much of North America. Is it worth investing in TikTok knowing this? Probably – as that’s where the people currently are (and may continue to be, depending on how things go). One of the most interesting trends that we’ve seen emerge recently is consumers (especially younger consumers) turning to social media as a search engine. The stat that really illustrates this shift is that Gen Z’ers are now using TikTok and Instagram more than Google to perform searches. The one platform that hasn’t gotten as much coverage - but could be potentially just as disruptive - is Reddit. Reddit’s scale is enormous, with 82.7MM daily users and a staggering amount of content being created by Redditors each day on every imaginable topic. And since this content is created by real people who are part of unique communities (AKA subreddits), we see that consumers are increasingly turning to the platform for advice and real feedback. One interesting behavior that has emerged is that searchers are adding the word “reddit” to the end of their Google searches to prioritize results from the platform and to cut through some of the noise of unhelpful links. Matt’s Hot Take™ - Broadly speaking, technology has trained us to live in an “on-demand” culture making search behaviors incredibly important for marketers to understand. Search has been a core part of the digital ecosystem for years, but with advances in technology and changing behaviors, it’s evolving quickly. While searching for objective information like, “how many hot dogs did Joey Chestnut eat on July 4th?” still works best on Google, more subjective queries like, “are hot dog eating contests fun to attend?” are increasingly drawing consumers to social media. Oh, and in case you were wondering… 57 & yes. These platforms are helping searchers get feedback from people like them and are a way to bypass a lot of the search-optimized and paid content on Google that can be less helpful in answering nuanced questions. In sum, marketers must ensure they understand the conversations happening about their brands and are front-footed in producing and fostering brand content via their communities across platforms because Google is no longer the internet’s single source-of-truth. #search #social #reddit Check out last week's newsletter where we also explore how Amazon is planning to fend off low-cost rivals: https://bit.ly/4eY49zg Subscribe inside the newsletter link for more!

Hello, online advertisers! This week we're offering a spotlight on Reddit, Inc. with a couple of updates regarding new advertising options, blocking of Bing browser and increased time spent on the platform. 📣 On July 25th, Reddit announced on their Reddit for Business blog that a new advertising format, Lead Generation Ads is now in public beta and will be available for all advertisers globally working directly with the platform. The format, coupled with Reddit's integration with Zapier, is said to "empower businesses to collect high-quality leads from Reddit's engaged and high-intent users more efficiently than ever before". During beta tests, one of the advertisers saw a 30% decrease in cost per lead and a 25% increase in lead submission rates compared to their previous conversion campaigns on the platform. 🔎 On July 1st Reddit has updated its robots.txt file, preventing many search engines and AI tools from crawling the site. While this change has not affected Google, a Microsoft representative confirmed that “Bing stopped crawling Reddit after they implemented their updated robots.txt file on July 1, which prohibits all crawling of their site”. Reddit and Google's cooperation seems to be tightening as earlier this year, Reddit struck a content licensing deal with a major AI company (later revealed to be Google) for training the search giant's AI models with the content of the platform. Reddit's ratings in Google Search also increased significantly over the course of last year, as according to Semrush data, the number of URLs ranking in Google jumped from 22 million between May 2023 and 41.1 million in February 2024. 📈 Reddit's platform improvements and partnerships secured to boost ad revenue have resulted in increased platform popularity. According to eMarketer's June 2024 forecast, Reddit has seen the biggest growth of average time spent per day by US active users among social networks. Reddit users will increase their time spent on the platform by an average of 11.0% in 2024, averaging 31 minutes (up from 28 minutes last year). Reddit’s US ad revenue is forcasted to grow by 27.9%, reaching $741.2 million. Are you taking full advantage of Reddit's potential or plan to do so in the future? #DigitalMarketingTrends #OnlineAdvertising #Reddit #SocialAdvertising #SearchEngineMarketing #AgencyTrends
