A few lesser known strategies for Competitive Intelligence Gathering 🕵♂️: Look at job postings: By visiting the careers page of your competitors and looking at hiring trends you can gain several insights. For instance, a surge in ML/AI roles could signal an upcoming expansion in those capabilities. Additionally, monitoring the locations they are hiring in can hint at geographical markets they're focusing on. Lurking in Communities/Forums: These communities especially if they are open to the public can give you insights into what the users are saying about competing products. What are their pain points? What are their unmet needs, what feature requests do they have? Make use of these insights to effectively tailor your message and attract new users for your own product. Leverage Knowledge Bases: Competitors' technical documents and knowledge bases offer a deep dive into their products. This is especially helpful if you are not able to get a free trial of your competitors products. “If I’d listen to customers, I’d had given them a faster horse” Henry Ford If you passed on the above piece of advice from Henry Ford to most business leaders the conversation would probably end fairly abruptly. I think the framing of Ford’s statement however was more along the lines of the “Jobs To Be Done” (JTBD) concept developed by the late HBS Professor Clayton Christensen. The frameworks transcends traditional demographics and product features, focusing instead on the underlying jobs or tasks that customers hire products or services to accomplish. In practice, whether you’re launching a new product, refining your strategy, or seeking growth opportunities, the JTB framework encourages: - Shifting from Features to Solutions: Move beyond surface-level features. Instead, we explore the functional, emotional, and social dimensions of what customers truly seek. - Uncovering Hidden Opportunities: By understanding the “job” a customer wants to get done, we can identify gaps in the market and create innovative solutions. - Customer-Centric Decision Making: JTBD keeps the focus squarely on the customer, guiding product development, marketing, and sales efforts. A few ways you can incorporate the JTB framework in your business include: - Customer Interviews: Engage with your customers. Ask open-ended questions like, “What led you to seek a solution for X?” or “What frustrates you about Y?” - Job Mapping: Map out the steps involved in the job your customers are trying to accomplish. What triggers the need? What obstacles do they face? - Competitor Analysis: Understand how competitors address the same job. What are their strengths and weaknesses? In essence, the JTBD framework encourages you to understand the real “why” behind customer behaviour and when applied frequently, can unlock additional value for your products and services.

Here are the top skills that you should be hiring for and developing.. please note absence of dinners/drinks/golf: Perspective Taking — What Buyers Think: Sellers must be adept at imagining the buyer’s point of view, assessing what information buyers have already consumed and supplementing that information with additional insight that affirms the value of a solution. Active Listening — What Buyers Say: At its core, active listening requires a seller to focus not on what to say next, but to be fully present in the moment as the buyer speaks. This enables sellers to respond pointedly in the moment with follow-up questions and probe for missing information throughout the conversation. Empathizing — How Buyers Feel: Sellers must exhibit emotional intelligence to anticipate the ways the buying journey might make buyers feel and adjust accordingly, particularly when it comes to bolstering confidence or alleviating the fear of failure. Cognitive Decoding — How Buyers Will Act: The most sophisticated form of seller mentalizing, sellers must be able to synthesize all the information at hand to predict how buyers will behave and adjust opportunity strategy to maximize the chances of a high-quality deal.
