🌟 Story of the Week - Conquering a chronic lung infection🌟 Lung problems plagued David Shoots since his youth. It would take buying a dream cottage as an adult for him to finally piece together the puzzle behind his poor health. David visited the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health (FIRH) at St. Joe's for testing. There, under the care of respirologist Dr. Gerard Cox, David was finally able to get the answers he needed. Check out the full story here: https://bit.ly/4czLB6G About the FIRH: For decades, the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health – a partnership between McMaster University / McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton – has been a world leader in the treatment of lung diseases like #Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (#COPD), and #PulmonaryFibrosis. The goal of the Institute is to conduct research that increases the understanding of respiratory health and disease though collaborative clinical studies that aim to enhance patient care at the Hospital. The Institute’s reputation as a leader in respiratory health is not only evident in the volume of high-quality, peer- reviewed studies it produces, but also by putting into practice new and innovative treatments that enhance the care of the patients St. Joe’s serves. #WeAreStJoes #TheFirestone #HamOnt

Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is a comprehensive set of tests designed to assess lung function and respiratory performance, crucial for diagnosing, managing, and monitoring respiratory diseases. Types: - Spirometry - Lung volume measurements - Forced vital capacity (FVC) - Maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) - Maximal inspiratory/expiratory pressures (MIP/MEP) - Body plethysmography - Diffusing capacity - Cardiopulmonary exercise tests - Bronchoprovocation tests PFTs measure lung volume, capacity, flow rates, and gas exchange, offering vital insights into the presence and severity of pulmonary conditions.

We would like to introduce you to one of our respiratory medicine experts based at Harefield Hospital – Dr Aran Singanayagam. Dr Singanayagam specialises in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory infections, post-COVID lung disease and general respiratory disease. His research program focuses on understanding why patients with chronic lung diseases are prone to lung infections and the mechanisms that drive disease progression. He also studies the mechanisms that lead to some people having persistent symptoms following viral infections including COVID19. The holidays are fast approaching! Which holiday is your favorite? 🎃🦃🎄 With the gathering of family and friends for parties and festivals along with cooler weather also comes the dreaded spread of germs 😮💨🤒🤧 Traditionally, we start to see respiratory illnesses begin to rise at the end of October with peaks in December and January. Is your hospital ready to handle severe respiratory illness? Influenza, COVID-19, and RSV can all lead to respiratory complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Prone positioning has been shown to reduce mortality in patients with ARDS. The Pronova-O₂™ is a tool that critical care clinicians can use to place patients in the prone position safely and efficiently. Contact Turn Medical at 855-ASK-TURN to learn more about Pronova-O₂™. ____ #turnmedical #pronova #respiratoryseason #respiratoryillness #pronetherapy #proneposition#prone #ARDS References https://lnkd.in/gVs873Kh Guerin, C. et al. In recognition of Healthy Lung Month this October, we're spotlighting the essential tests used to diagnose chronic lung conditions. Spirometry is one of the most widely used, non-invasive tests for assessing lung function. It measures both the volume of air a patient can exhale and the speed at which they do so, providing crucial data for diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). As an effort-dependent test, results may vary based on the patient's exertion, but frequent calibration ensures its accuracy. Follow along as we continue to explore the different methods used to diagnose chronic lung conditions. #HealthyLungMonth #LungHealth #Spirometry #RespiratoryCare

When it comes to respiratory health, early detection can make all the difference. Identifying pulmonary conditions like COPD, asthma, and other respiratory diseases in their initial stages allows for faster intervention, more effective treatment, and improved patient outcomes. Key reasons why early detection is critical in pulmonary care: ✅ Prevent disease progression – Catching conditions early can slow or stop their advancement ✅ Optimize treatment plans – Tailor interventions based on timely, accurate assessments ✅ Improve quality of life – Early care minimizes symptoms, hospitalizations, and complications ✅ Reduce healthcare costs – Timely treatment often leads to fewer medical interventions later on Innovations like AGM100 are helping clinicians diagnose and manage pulmonary conditions with greater precision. Let’s prioritize early detection to ensure better respiratory health for all! Presenting insights from our research comparing abnormal respiratory sounds and peak expiratory flow (PEF) measurements in patients with acute exacerbations of asthma or COPD. Traditionally, PEF has been a key tool in assessing respiratory conditions. However, our findings suggest that relying solely on PEF may not provide a complete understanding of treatment response. Through continuous auscultation using our RESP® Biosensor, we discovered that while many patients demonstrated improvement in peak flow, fewer showed improvement in cough and wheeze symptoms. These findings indicate that changes in wheezes and coughs may serve as independent markers of disease severity alongside PEF measurements, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach to respiratory assessment and underscoring the potential of continuous auscultation technology in enhancing patient outcomes.
