Recovery is an important but often overlooked phase in the disaster life cycle that begins immediately after the threat to human life has subsided. The 2025 Preparedness Summit provides an opportunity to ask questions and develop answers as we consider roles and responsibilities, and resources needed to undertake the crucial step of recovery. Submit an abstract for the 2025 Preparedness Summit by September 13. New this year, conference registration is also now open with a Summer Special rate through September. What can systems thinking offer the way you allocate, organise and galvanise your team and workplace budget in order to make the best impact possible? The recent Australian Disaster Resilience Network seminar on systems thinking inspired many thoughts on this. Here are two takeaways to consider when you are leading a team or organisation, trying to galvanise everyone to set and stick to an agreed direction that will help you make the impact you most want to make: 1. PERSPECTIVE IS KEY TO SUCCESSFUL PLANNING. You and your team have a limited perspective of the system you are working in, influenced by your observations, evaluations of what is legitimate and judgements about what is relevant. One important question this raises is... "In what way may our reference system fail to do justice to the perspective of different stakeholder groups?" For more on this look up Ulrich's 'eternal triangle'. Consider how you can each be more aware of the perspectives you bring to the team and how you can engage the perspectives of other stakeholders. This will help to ensure you are setting direction based on a high-quality understanding of the system you are working within. If you would like to see an example of engagement that embraces a systems-thinking approach, search the work of The Alive Network, mental health research translation that centres lived experience. Also, the agriculture sector has many examples of farmers and service providers engaging to create solutions together. 2. KNOW THE ENVIRONMENT THAT INFLUENCES YOUR WORK. It is important to know who and what is influencing the work you are doing, and to be super clear on who and what you are trying to influence. There are numerous processes you can use to surface this data. One basic yet highly useful exercise I use with teams is a process based on three questions courtesy of nRhythm's regenerative organisational design framework: - Who and what influences your organisation or project indirectly? - Who and what do you want your organisation or project to influence indirectly? - Who and what is the community that you work directly with through your organisation or project? The end result of this conversation could be a mapping exercise, and you can track how the map shifts and changes over time. I would love to hear what comes to mind when you read the above! Please comment below. Thank you to the speakers and organisers who generously shared their time for this event amongst their many competing demands. Professor Lauren Rickards (LaTrobe University), Maree Grenfell (Once Upon Tomorrow), Emily Humphreys (from Systems Change for Good), Miriam Lumb (ADRN co-convenor) and John Richardson (Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience). And thank you Joanne Vigliaturo for the invitation! There is a link to the recording here https://lnkd.in/gnsd6zaH - Adrian Pyle you may be keen to check this out.

Last night the Australian Disaster Resilience Network hosted the first Resilience Exchange, with Professor Lauren Rickards, ADRN co-convenor Miriam Lumb, and Emily Humphreys from Systems Change For Good on Systems Thinking in uncertain times. Expertly chaired by Maree Grenfell, with me on the decks for Q and A and links. Great turn out, and you can watch it here https://lnkd.in/gnsd6zaH We aim to bring the Resilience Exchange to you quarterly (and if you are in Sydney for the Australian Disaster Resilience Conference, there is always the legendary network drinks on the Thursday night after the conference) If you are interested in joining the ADRN, check out our Linkedin page
