To commemorate World Health Day on April 7th, OCRC would like to highlight the release of two new infographics that explore insights on the occupational groups that were most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, based on a study of a large group of Ontario workers.   As the COVID-19 pandemic had a large impact on workers across Ontario, understanding the work settings where COVID-19 infection occurred most frequently can inform prevention policies and practices.    Check out the infographics by visiting the 'Key Findings' section of our project page: odsp-ocrc.ca/covid/

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO): Strengthening Public Health Systems and Services through National Partnerships to Improve and Protect the Nation's Health. This cooperative agreement will support organizations that work with governmental public health and other sectors, over five years, to provide capacity-building assistance within the public health system. This funding will provide capacity-building assistance to: - Increase the knowledge, skill, and ability to deliver essential public health services, - Improve organizational and systems capacity and capability to address prioritized, equity-based public health priorities, and - Strengthen the nation's public health infrastructure and performance. Have a say on how the new Australian CDC uses health care data… Building a more gender-responsive health care system in Australia requires the careful use of health care data to inform decision making. The Australian Centre for Disease Control (CDC), a proposed new authority for public health, will use health care data to ensure Australia is well prepared for public health emergencies, especially outbreaks of disease.  The interim Australian Centre for Disease Control is currently conducting public consultations on how the Australian CDC plans to use this data and is seeking feedback from a range of community members.  These consultations will explore: - your community’s understanding of how the government uses data  - your community’s views and concerns about government use of data  - strategies and learnings for communicating the use of data to the community.  The workshops run from Monday 9 September until Friday 4 October and will take up to 90 minutes.  To learn more, participate in a workshop or send a written submission, visit the website: https://lnkd.in/gJZy6Ejc #GenderResponsiveHealth #WomensHealth

The World Health Organization has declared mpox a public health emergency. The rapid spread of mpox, formerly called monkeypox, in African countries constitutes a global health emergency, the World Health Organization declared on Wednesday. The threat this time is deadlier. Since the beginning of this year, the Democratic Republic of Congo alone has reported 15,600 Mpox cases and 537 deaths. Those most at risk include women and children under 15. The outbreak has spread through 13 African countries, including a few that had never reported mpox cases before. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared a “public health emergency of continental security,” the first time the organization has taken that step since the African Union granted it the power to do so last year. Info. @The New York Times It can be contacted through: face-to-face (talking or breathing) skin-to-skin (touching or vaginal/anal sex) mouth-to-mouth (kissing) mouth-to-skin contact (oral sex or kissing the skin) respiratory droplets or short-range aerosols from prolonged close contact Symptoms of mpox include: rash fever sore throat headache muscle aches back pain low energy swollen lymph nodes. Self-care and prevention: stay home and in your own room if possible wash hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer  keep skin dry and uncovered avoid touching items in shared spaces and disinfect shared spaces frequently  use saltwater rinses for sores in the mouth take sitz baths or warm baths with baking soda or Epsom salts for body sores take over-the-counter medications for pain like paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen. Getting an mpox vaccine can help prevent infection. " During future epidemics and pandemics, there may be a period of time before the widespread availability of medical countermeasures where PHSMs may again be relied upon to reduce disease transmission, and mitigate deleterious health impacts. The public health objective of reducing overall harms to population health should continue to apply in crisis situations. A general principle should be that measures with the highest level of acceptability/feasibility and the lowest negative consequences could be introduced first and removed last, while also noting that the early implementation of some measures will yield the highest effectiveness."
