At around 10AM on Saturday, May 18, 2024, crowds were starting to gather at Connaught Hospital, the largest government hospital in #SierraLeone. Dozens of people were reporting unusual symptoms like vomiting, dizziness and weakness. By 2PM that afternoon, a total of 104 residents had arrived at the hospital seeking treatment, raising alarms that the capital city of Freetown was in the middle of a major outbreak of food poisoning. By paying attention to early signals through event-based surveillance, Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health and Sanitation brought this outbreak to an end swiftly and effectively. Read how they did it in our latest feature. Thank you to our partners including the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC Foundation and Jhpiego Sierra Leone for your contributions to advancing event-based surveillance capacities in Sierra Leone and other countries across the region.

In a recently published report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drinking water-associated disease outbreaks in the USA between 2015 and 2020 were analysed. The data is based on outbreaks that were voluntarily reported by health authorities. ➡ During the study period, the number of Legionella-associated disease outbreaks increased. ➡ Drinking water contaminants, primarily biofilm-associated bacteria such as Legionella, cost the United States billions of dollars annually. ➡ The test results once again show the urgent need for regular monitoring and cleaning of drinking water systems. https://lnkd.in/eD3S3SS5 #Legionella #biofilms #cdc #watersafety #cleanwater

https://lnkd.in/d5YuubWp The observed range of biofilm and enteric drinking water pathogen contributing factors illustrate the complexity of drinking water-related disease prevention and the need for water source-to-tap prevention strategies. Legionella-associated outbreaks have increased in number over time and were the leading cause of reported drinking water outbreaks, including hospitalizations and deaths. Enteric illness outbreaks primarily linked to wells represented approximately half the cases during this reporting period. This report enhances CDC efforts to estimate the U.S. illness and health care cost impacts of waterborne disease, which revealed that biofilm-related pathogens, NTM, and Legionella have emerged as the predominant causes of hospitalizations and deaths from waterborne- and drinking water-associated disease.

Public health officials to use wastewater to track birdflu infections. This is because the reluctance among dairy farmers to report H5N1 bird flu outbreaks within their herds, and the refusal to allow testing of their workers has made it difficult to keep up with the virus’s rapid spread. Director of Quality & Food Safety | Multi-Site Leadership | Supplier Quality | Quality Management Systems with 20+ Years of FDA Experience | Quality Assurance in Medical Device, Foods, Cosmetics, and Dietary Supplements
The food industry could learn a lot about preventive action from more highly regulated industries (for example, pharma or med device). Often it falls short, relying on training of employees which both 1) invalidates the effectiveness of any previous training and 2) relies on human controls, which should not be the foundation of any preventive action plan as they aren't 100% reliable. We need to do better and should learn from our colleagues in other industries.
Hot off the press. CDC reports, once again, recent findings (consistent with previous FoodNet reports) that indicate a “lack of progress towards reductions in foodborne disease.” Sure, some will say better detection might be playing a role, but I’ve always argued that we cannot use that as a crutch. Just like new technologies can lead to better detection, new technologies can also accelerate prevention. Good intentions & activities don’t impress me much; interventions that result in real reductions in the incidence of foodborne disease do. To do so, we should get back to what we started….Smarter Food Safety. Together, we CAN and MUST “bend the curve of foodborne illness.” #unfinishedbusiness #SmarterFoodSafety https://lnkd.in/gmSNxDK9
