Earlier this year, Kano became the first state in #Nigeria to adopt comprehensive subnational health security legislation that will better protect its people from the threat of infectious disease outbreaks.
As Emem Udoh of our team said, “The Kano Health Security Bill is a milestone for both the state and Nigeria. It’s a huge step forward for protecting everyday citizens, and something we’re working to emulate across other states in Nigeria.”
The passage of Kano's Health Security Bill was made possible through our partnership with Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Kano State government, Global Health Advocacy Incubator, and other colleagues. We're extremely grateful for their commitment in bringing this bill to fruition. Read all about what's in the bill, and the efforts that led to this public health victory, in our latest feature story.
Join me at the first-ever conference on "An Integrated Approach to Global Health Security" where we will explore the case of establishing an Integrated Public Health Emergency Operations Center in Nigeria. Let's come together to discuss and learn about this crucial topic! See you there!
The Jigawa Public Health Security Bill has been passed into Law by the Jigawa State House of Assembly today. Governor Mallam Umar Namadi had earlier presented the bill for passage
The law is to enhance public health security in the State by promoting health security, hygiene, and well-being, providing information on public health risks, and ensuring responses to health conditions respect human rights. It includes establishing a Public Health Emergency Operation Centre, supporting the National Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response Strategy, and coordinating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The law also provides for developing procedures for investigating and responding to notifiable diseases, ensuring robust surveillance of various health threats, and aligning with International Health Regulations. Additionally, it emphasizes accurate health information dissemination, collaboration with federal authorities, and the performance of public health functions by state and local governments.

M-POX: a public health emergency of international concern — the highest level of alarm under international health law.
“The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of mpox in eastern DRC, its detection in neighboring countries that had not previously reported mpox and the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying,” he said.
“The emergency committee met and advised me that the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice.”
Also known as a PHEIC, this is a status given by WHO to “extraordinary events” that pose a public health risk to other countries through the international spread of disease. These outbreaks may require a coordinated international response.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who joined Data.FI's Summer Webinar Series session yesterday on #GlobalHealthSecurity and Nigeria's first Integrated Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (IPHEOC) in Edo State. Our panelists detailed IPHEOC's role in enhancing disease monitoring and mitigation efforts. A recording is available here: https://lnkd.in/gXW5NsYc
Dr. Stanley Ehiarimwian, the Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Health, and Dr. Stephenson B. Ojeifo (MBBS, MPH, FRSPH, FCPA), Director of Public Health in the State, summarized IPHEOC's structure and operational details, explaining how it leverages data systems across disease areas to create synergy, identifies disease patterns, and supports case-based surveillance in line with the global health security One Health agenda.
#WHO Edo State Coordinator, Dr. Nora Eyo, noted how the IPHEOC aligns with WHO's global health security priorities, bringing together various stakeholders to review health issues, develop mitigation plans, monitor implementation, and harness the power of #digitalsystems to improve healthcare programs. Collaboration with state health ministries, departments, and agencies and continued engagement with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention to mobilize resources and ongoing donor support are critical.
USAID’s Omosalewa Oyelaran MPH, MHSA discussed the need for stakeholder buy-in, including national and sub-national governments, as crucial to securing support from donors like USAID for innovative initiatives like the IPHEOC. The strong support from the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, was highlighted as key in setting up the IPHEOC.
Other key takeaways from the session include:
1. Effective health security infrastructure relies on robust collaborations between government entities, public health organizations, and international donors.
2. Leveraging data practices within the IPHEOC enables real-time responses to disease outbreaks.
3. The IPHEOC model serves as a blueprint for other public health operations combating infectious diseases across borders.
Many thanks to our panelists for sharing their expertise and stimulating a vibrant dialogue. Special thanks to USAID for their support of the Data.FI project, which is critical to the success of the IPHEOC in Edo State. To all participants who joined in, thank you!

Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) has always been a crucial component of effective public health responses during outbreaks.
As the lead for the RCCE pillar in Nigeria's Mpox Incident Management System, I have been deeply involved in shaping and implementing RCCE strategies. It has been an intense yet rewarding journey, developing strategies, mapping resources, and coordinating for seamless intervention implementation.
One of my key achievements has been establishing strong communication and feedback mechanisms with RCCE structures in all Mpox-reporting states. This collaboration spans from state and LGA health education stakeholders to One Health RCCE stakeholders at the state level. Our focus on co-development and participation ensures that our efforts are inclusive and impactful.
Encouragingly, Mpox cases are being detected and reported to health facilities, which represents a positive shift compared to previous outbreaks. Despite challenges like the high cost of treatment, cases continue to reach hospitals, and I’m proud to share that our case fatality rate remains at 0%.
There’s still a lot of work to do, but this progress fuels our determination. I look forward to joining an upcoming discussion with international experts, where we will share experiences and lessons learned from Mpox response efforts in different countries.

Legal preparedness is paramount in securing a proper response to health emergencies. Taking stock of the EU post pandemic reforms is perhaps the best way to keep the attention high on future sanitary crisis. This event brings together experts and academics to discuss how to advance in prevention and response capacity.

Nigeria's health security was front and center this week at the NCDC!
Led by the NCDC, we convened a crucial dialogue with national and state leaders in the One Health Space, partners, and advocates to finalize Nigeria's 2024 Pandemic Fund application.
The Honorable Coordinating Minister of Health, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate, underscored the urgency of our mission: "The question is not if another pandemic will strike, but when. As global discussions on a pandemic treaty continue, Nigeria must take proactive steps to strengthen our defenses against recurring outbreaks."
Our Pandemic Fund application outlines a strategic investment in Nigeria's health security, focusing on:
Early warning systems: Enhancing disease surveillance to detect threats sooner.
Laboratory infrastructure: Strengthening diagnostic capabilities for faster response.
Workforce development: Building a skilled public health workforce for sustained resilience.
I am honored to have contributed to this critical initiative as part of the National secretariat. Together, we will build a healthier, safer future for Nigeria.

Health awareness outreach was conducted in Portharcourt, Rivers State where the community people and the market men and women were sensitised on Lassa fever and it's preventive measures in order to combat the present re-emerging outbreak of Lassa fever in the country.
The re-emerging outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria keeps rising with cumulative of 4,726 cases since the first week of this year and death cases recorded @IFRC. According to @NCDC, Rivers state has recorded 58 suspected cases, 5 confirmed cases and 3 death cases as at week 15 since the re-emergence this year 2024 which prompted us to reinforce the community by health educating them on the need to strengthen the preventive measures including the demonstration of proper hand washing and for prompt identification and treatment if any case is suspected to be reported to the hospital.
As a nurse and public health advocate I'm committed to the health and wellbeing of the community and the country at large.

Just attended the Gatefield Health Summit #Beyond65 and I'm still reeling from the eye-opening discussions!
Did you know that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) account for 74% of global deaths, often striking before age 65? In Nigeria, NCDs claim 1/3 of lives lost.
The summit shifted the conversation from individual lifestyle changes to policy advocacy. It's time to push for policies that promote public health, like reducing sugar content in beverages.
A key takeaway: fiscal policies can be a game-changer in achieving SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-being). Humans can be rebellious, but strict policies can drive sustainable change.
Let's move beyond awareness and towards action!
I love this new approach to engaging our people, especially as health concerns like Monkeypox become more prominent. I suggest that, to address Monkeypox, particularly in highlighted regions and other areas across the continent, we should also focus on Bayelsa State in southern Nigeria. Here are the few strategies that I know can be employed:
1.Surveillance and Monitoring:
Hotspot Mapping: Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other data-driven tools to map hotspots.
2.Collaboration with Local Health Authorities:
Coordination with State Health Ministries: Collaborate with state health authorities, like the Bayelsa State Ministry of Health, to ensure a coordinated response and the availability of necessary resources.
3.Public Awareness Campaigns: Educate the public on preventive measures through press conferences at the local level, town hall meetings that health officials must attend, and community outreach, focusing on avoiding contact with animals that may carry the virus and promoting personal hygiene practices.
The Africa CDC is moving towards declaring a continent-wide public health emergency on Mpox.
Join us for a special press briefing to learn more about the implications for Africa's #PublicHealth security.
