Health care organizations face an inflection point. With operating margins hovering at historically low levels, organizations urgently require funds not only to invest in core needs like physical plants, technology and clinical programs but also to fuel growth, to drive care transformation and to address expanding priorities around social drivers of health, access, equity and well-being. This makes it critical for all of the health care organization’s financial resources to be deployed to their most effective and best use; yet many organizations still diminish the potential impact of philanthropy by using charitable dollars for initiatives outside their strategy. Given how philanthropy deployment can significantly influence a health care organization’s ability to invest in future opportunities and outcomes, organizations should pursue alignment between strategy and philanthropy. Kaiser Permanente’s Risant Health, the nonprofit subsidiary created to accelerate the adoption of value-based care in community-based health systems, has finalized its acquisition of Pennsylvania-based Geisinger health system, which has 10 hospitals. The deal was first announced in April 2023. Risant said it expects to acquire four to five additional health systems over the next four to five years. Through this first acquisition, Washington, D.C.-based Risant brings together Kaiser Permanente’s integrated care and coverage expertise and Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger’s experience in advancing value-based care in a model that includes various payers and a broad network of providers, while serving some of the most vulnerable and marginalized communities. https://lnkd.in/gEhBFeK4

Kudos to Research Canada for the opportunity and for the broader event about the importance of enhancing investment in research. Some of my comments today: - Urgent need for greater attention to metrics in the R&I ecosystem; - We need to better facilitate partnerships and collaboration between universities and colleges (almost 40% of ALL research in Canada happens in post-secondary institutions - OECD average is 16-17%); - We need to re-work the institutional architecture of funders to remove barriers to college participation; - We need to recognize the increasing focus on mission- or challenge-driven research by funders; - We need to reduce the transaction costs of taking knowledge from the laboratory and turning it into an innovation for the marketplace. New research on the acceptability of lifestyle medicine for treating mental illness have just been published. "The findings indicate strong acceptability of lifestyle medicine for mental illness, a preference for non-pharmacological treatment approaches, and an understanding of the challenges associated with making long-term healthy lifestyle modifications amongst people who have lived experience of mental illness."
