As a deaf woman in tech, I know firsthand the challenges that disabled individuals face when it comes to finding jobs. Many job applications and interviewers require years of experience, putting us at a disadvantage. Due to our disabilities, it can take us years to find jobs, resulting in lower experience levels than the standard. So what can we do about this requirement? Hearing is a #privilege, and the discomfort around #deaf individuals hinders their opportunities in the workforce. Deaf people face challenges securing job interviews, often resorting to concealing their disability. The root issue is the #unconsciousbias stemming from a lack of awareness about privilege. To address this, HR-led privilege workshops are essential to foster workplace #inclusivity. Breaking down these barriers can create environments where #diversity is not just accepted but celebrated. It's time to replace discomfort with understanding and exclusion with true inclusion.

How equal and accessible is your candidate's background screening process? Individuals with impairments or disabilities make up a considerable portion of the world’s population with access to the internet. To be able to reach as many people in your talent pool as possible, you need to make your candidate process accessible. The facts - 15% of the world’s population has some sort of disability (WHO) - 59.6% of the U.S. population with disabilities were living in a household with internet access (Statista) - 23% percent of disabled respondents say they “never” go online (Pew Research) - In the U.S., there are currently about 56.7 million Americans with a disability (Census Bureau). - According to WHO statistics. 217 million people worldwide had moderate to severe vision impairment in 2015, with this number expected to rise to 588 million by 2050 (WHO) - Approximately 6.5 million people in the United States and 1-3% of the global population has an intellectual disability (American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) - In the US, about 74.6 million people have some type of physical disability (John Hopkins Medicine. “Statistics of Disability.” 2013) - The population of people with different disabilities in the United States is; Hearing Difficulty: 316,450,569 Vision Difficulty: 316,450,569 Cognitive Difficulty: 296,658,475 Ambulatory Difficulty: 296,658,475 Think of the possibilities if your candidate screening process offered accessible options like those listed below. Research shows Deaf women are twice as likely to experience #domesticviolence than hearing women. And reports of physical and sexual abuse are up to 20 times greater in Deaf compared to hearing people. 3 ways perpetrators are weaponising their victims' deafness - enhance their vulnerability, increase barriers to reporting, and diminish their credibility. Recent statistics indicate a positive shift towards greater opportunities for disabled individuals in today's job market. Current data demonstrates an encouraging trend of increased acceptance and support for individuals with physical disabilities during the interview process. Employers are recognizing the benefits of diversity and are actively working to create more inclusive hiring practices that accommodate all candidates. Advancements in technology and a focus on accessibility have contributed to offering fair opportunities for job seekers with physical disabilities. Employers are adapting their recruitment strategies to ensure equal access and support for all candidates, irrespective of their physical conditions. Today, individuals with physical disabilities are more likely to secure job opportunities based on their qualifications and skills, signaling progress towards a more inclusive job market. Companies talk a talk about hiring Disabled People, yet fail to create an accessible recruitment process. Job Descriptions with ableist language and requirements. Unclear and filled with nice to haves rather than must have. Inaccessible Application Formats. Inaccessible Websites, so we can't even do our research on you. Oh and not forgetting the complete lack of representation. No adjustment/ accommodations process, seriously folks, it's 2024. Inaccessible Comms from your hiring teams. Recruiter Bias and outright ableism due to lack of training. I could go on. Inclusion without accessibility is not inclusion, it is exclusion.
