📝 With the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), which is expected to come into force in May, the EU has, for the first time, ventured into the task of putting the supply chains for critical minerals on a broader footing with a legislative framework. Our whitepaper, produced in cooperation with Adamas Intelligence and TRADIUM GmbH, highlights the key provisions of the ambitious new legislation and the questions we feel are left unanswered. The focus of the paper is on lithium and rare earths. The English-language report is now available for download. Investing in Critical Minerals: A Conversation with Brian Menell Center for Strategic & International Studies 12 Mar 2024 Over the last three decades, China has become a dominant player in the supply chains of minerals key to national and energy security. The United States needs a strategy for reducing dependency and strengthening mineral supply that prioritizes creating an enabling environment for the private sector to compete with state-owned enterprises. Please join the CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program for a conversation on the future of investment in critical minerals. Brian Menell, Chairman & CEO of TechMet, will join Gracelin Baskaran, Research Director and Senior Fellow in the Energy Security and Climate Change Program at CSIS, to discuss this and more.

What if we run out of the critical minerals needed to keep humans and machines always connected, or all those cars moving ? What if run out of minerals needed to tackle the climate change? Or what if the world’s insatiable need for materials and minerals continue to harm people and planet in many places? Businesses need to do better. It starts with a thorough focus on responsible use of minerals, technology innovation and closing the loop in business operations and supply chain. We are doing our part and will continue on that path. Give my colleague Elina Raask a read. #sustainable #responsiblebusiness
Tracing the materials used in our products and using our best efforts to ensure they are responsibly sourced and conflict-free is critical. We choose to engage in tackling this complex topic, rather than looking the other way. As part of our ongoing efforts to transparently outline how we are working with this challenging area,we have published our annual conflict minerals report. What should the new government do as it continues with the 2022 Critical Minerals Strategy? In June we had our very own Parliamentary Fellow, Lewis Pickett (a Committee Specialist at the House of Commons), who looked at exactly that. "I was looking at critical minerals to get a better understanding of the next steps the UK Government may wish to take. The conversations I had really opened my eyes to the complexities involved with solving this problem, not only practically but ethically too. It can be hard to bridge the gap between policy and academia sometimes, but this placement brought home the value of doing so." You can now read his report on ‘‘Critical Minerals: potential next steps,’ and see what he thinks the potential next steps for the new government should be ➡️ https://bit.ly/3WWonlP

The Blended Capital Group - ESG, Governance, Strategy and Finance Integration Leadership Focused on Impact Delivery
I was thrilled being part of the Critical Minerals International Alliance webinar earlier this week. Thanks Olimpia Pilch and Jeff Townsend for organizing, and thanks David Livingstone, Terry Garde and Rosanna Tufo for being fantastic co-panelists. Can artisanal and small scale #mining be part of the #criticalminerals solution. The answer - a resounding yes. 🎉 #ASM formalization increases productivity by 2X, 3X or even 5X sometimes while also delivering significant shifts in social outcomes. #mininginvestment and #impactinvestment that supports formalization is commercially realistic given the combination of value and impact that is created 🎉 ASM is huge - the sector already plays important economic roles for many critical minerals and can grow significantly 🎉 professionalization in the sector is a geopolitical opportunity - productivity growth in a sector that has been largely invisible 🎉 misconceptions around the nature of ASM need to be eliminated - artisanal miners are inherently legal, productivity growth supports returns, risks are managed through diversified portfolios of projects across countries and minerals The Blended Capital Group and our partners are committed to reimagining outcomes in ASM. Results make commercial, social and geopolitical sense as stable predictable business relationships increase tonnage, development, value and dignity. Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) Levin Sources BanQu Inc. Napier Meridian If you didn't have the chance to join us earlier in the week, you can access the recording below. I hope you find the conversation interesting and informative. Reach out if you want to learn more.
⛏️ The CMIA was delighted to host an insightful discussion on the role of ASM in critical minerals supply chains. 🎥 Watch the recording here | https://lnkd.in/eYDzvKf6 The discussion focused on key themes: - Tackling misconceptions with education to raise awareness - Incentivising finance and impact investment to help support professionalisation - The journey of formalisation of the sector and flexible legal frameworks - Creation of reliable offtake purchasing and stable predictable relationships - Driving greater supply chain transparency in the context of geopolitics and investor confidence including space observation - Collaboration rather than allocation of responsibility to a single stakeholder - Inclusion at grassroots levels A big thank you to our wonderful panellists for sharing their insights and expertise! And a warm thanks to all of those who tuned in and asked excellent questions.
