We’ve just spent an inspiring couple of days at the Citizen Zoo Rewilding Futures conference in Cambridge, surrounded by people passionate about rewilding and nature restoration. Our very own Benedict Macdonald shared how we can scale up nature restoration profitably on farms and estates, while Peter Cooper gave a brilliant talk on glowworm breeding and reintroductions. It’s been a fantastic chance to learn, connect, and feel energised about the future of rewilding! 🌱🐛 #RewildingFuturesConference #NatureRestoration #CitizenZoo

Some projects are just such fun to work on. Especially the ones that benefit our environment and the community! Here's an insight into the work i've been undertaking with Melbourne Water to document their work to protect and connect populations of growling grass frogs by securing conservation areas and creating breeding wetlands. (further info in the comment below) Our time lapse cameras not only provide the pictures we need to produce time lapse videos, they are a great resource for project monitoring along the way! #projectmanagement #timelapse

Did you know that the Whooping Crane population was almost wiped off in 1973, with fewer than 50 of these gorgeous birds in existence? 🦢 However, innovative programmes like captive breeding and wetland management, as well as creative techniques like teaching juvenile cranes how to migrate, have increased their numbers to an estimated 600 today! 💚 This demonstrates the strength of conservation and our potential to make a meaningful difference in conserving vulnerable species. Let's all do our part to help #SaveTheWhoopingCranes for future generations to enjoy. We can do wonderful things for our planet and its inhabitants. 🌿🐾 #WhoopingCranes #ConservationSuccess #JoinTheFight.

This past month, I had the privilege to attend the 4-day training 'Natural Grazing in Practice' organized by the FREE Nature Foundation. It was a fantastic opportunity to dive deep into the role and practical application of natural grazing across various ecosystems. The course covered a range of key themes: - Natural processes and the role of grazing: Understanding how grazers drive essential processes in natural areas. - Rewilding cattle and horses; the daily practice of grazing: Insights into herd dynamics and real-world challenges. - New insights, species, and grazing strategies: Exploring the latest trends and techniques to enhance the effectiveness of grazing projects. - Grazing and nature outcomes: flora and fauna: Evaluating the impact of grazing on biodiversity and ecosystem services. In addition, we tackled important questions like: What role do grazers play in an ecosystem? What outcomes can be expected from natural grazing? Which species and combinations are most effective in different natural environments? How do you stay compliant with laws and regulations? What does a natural, socially structured herd look like? And how do you manage challenges like thistles, ragwort, recreational visitors, and off-leash dogs? A particularly valuable aspect of the training was linking theory to practice during field excursions to De Maashorst (Nistelrode), Munnikenland (Andel), Noordwaard Polder (Biesbosch), and the Slikken van de Heen (Grevelingen). Seeing the principles of natural grazing in action across such diverse landscapes was incredibly insightful. Photos by: Nick Haarselhorst van den Goorbergh #rewilding #freenature #grazing
