As Amanda Gorman writes in her poem, "Believer's Hymn for the Republic": Today, we gather so that our Founders' words do not go diminished. But also so that the work does not go unfinished. For it's not just in a declaration of independence But the everyday declaration of its descendants That make a people equal. In observance of Independence Day, ReUp offices are closed today. This holiday offers a time to reflect on our nation’s history and take the time to consider the opportunities we all have to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable future. Today, on Juneteenth, we pause to reflect on the profound significance of freedom and the relentless pursuit of equality. This day not only marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the US, but also reminds us of the ongoing struggles for justice and equity worldwide. In this moment of reflection, I feel deeply moved to honor the legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois, a pioneering scholar, activist, and a foundational figure of the civil rights movement. Du Bois championed a vision of democracy and equality that transcended national borders, advocating for democracy, economic and political equality that is universally accessible, irrespective or race or geography. Du Bois taught us that the quest for equality spans across organizations, nations, or eras, it’s a collective and enduring effort. His insights into the interconnectedness and interdependence of these global struggles continue to inspire those committed to these causes today; and his steadfast belief in a world where everyone can thrive and fully participate in a democratic process and equitable society serves to guide us in our actions. As we observe Juneteenth, let us embrace the lessons of our past, and renew our commitment to the future – a future where freedom and equality are realities enjoyed by all.

National Freedom Day commemorates the emancipation from slavery. On this day in 1865, President Lincoln officially adopted the 13th Amendment, a pivotal moment that abolished slavery in the United States. This historic amendment underscores the principles of equality and freedom for all individuals, leaving an indelible mark on American history. It is essential to recognize the profound impact of this quest for freedom, justice, and equality not only in the United States but also on Canada. The Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses, played a crucial role in the escape of enslaved individuals to freedom, with some finding sanctuary in Canada. This shared history highlights the interconnected struggle for human rights and freedom on both sides of the border. In the spirit of our collective journey towards justice and equality, National Freedom Day serves as a poignant reminder. Let's celebrate the richness of diversity that defines each of us, fostering unity in our differences as we work together for a more promising and harmonious future.
