Compostable packaging, often made from plant-based materials like cornstarch, seems the perfect solution to our single-use woes. However, the reality is far more complex, writes Alex Robinson, CEO at Hubbub. The Big Plastic Count revealed UK households discard 1.7 billion pieces of plastic weekly, 83% related to food and drink. While compostables sound like a guilt-free fix, they only biodegrade under specific conditions while confusing labels and inconsistent disposal options mean they often end up in regular waste or recycling, creating more problems than solutions. There’s no silver bullet for our throwaway culture. We need a multi-faceted approach: reducing unnecessary packaging, prioritising reusables and supporting infrastructure for compostables where feasible. Markets like London's Mercato Metropolitano saved 190,000 single-use items by switching to returnable crockery. Hubbub, in partnership with The University of Sheffield and UK Research and Innovation, found that standardised labeling and consistent messaging are key to helping the public dispose of compostables correctly. #Sustainability #CompostablePackaging #Hubbub #UniversityOfSheffield #BigPlasticCount #UKRI #MercatoMetropolitano #PackagingRevolution #ReduceReuseRecycle #CircularEconomy #ZeroWaste Terry Slavin Liam Dowd https://lnkd.in/eDAcxwHE

🎯 Germany has one of the highest plastic packaging waste generation rates in Europe on a per-capita basis, but it's early, successful adoption of extended producer responsibility (EPR), deposit return schemes (DRS), and now #reuse and #refill business models offers some interesting insights. 🎯 Among other aspects, scaling packaging reuse requires industry collaboration to standardize packaging designs for diverse F&B applications to drive wider consumer adoption and reduce total system costs. 🎯 Other countries that lack Germany’s infrastructure to process used packaging – and the culture around returning it – may find it tricky to build up similar reuse and refill systems from scratch. #singleuseplastic #packaging #reducereuserecycle #circulareconomy #closingtheloop

♻ Yesterday the European Parliament released new rules to make packaging more sustainable in the future. The rules aim to reduce waste, particularly the amount of plastic wasted. As part of the new measures, some single use plastic packaging will be banned from 2030 and all packaging with a few exceptions must be fully recyclable. To further reduce unnecessary packaging, all manufacturers and importers must ensure that the weight and volume of packaging are minimized. 🗨 We have always advocated sustainable packaging made from good raw materials with low environmental impact. We early on understood the importance of pallet optimization and that packaging should not contain more air than necessary. ✅ Do you want to make sure that your packaging meets the new requirements for 2030? We help you create a well-thought-out, sustainable packaging for your product. #frontpac #packaging #sustainability

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐔 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 The European Parliament has adopted new measures to make packaging more sustainable and reduce packaging waste across the EU. The regulation, aimed at addressing growing waste, harmonizing market rules, and boosting the circular economy, received strong support with 476 votes in favor, 129 against, and 24 abstentions. Key measures include: Reduce Packaging and Restrict Certain Types: Targets include a 5% reduction by 2030, 10% by 2035, and 15% by 2040. A maximum empty space ratio of 50% is set for grouped, transport, and e-commerce packaging. Single-use plastic packaging types will be banned from January 1, 2030, including packaging for unprocessed fresh fruit and vegetables, foods and beverages in cafés and restaurants, individual portions, toiletry miniatures in accommodations, and very lightweight plastic carrier bags. Encourage Reuse and Refill Options: Specific reuse targets for packaging by 2030, and final distributors of beverages and take-away food will need to offer reusable options, aiming for 10% of products in reusable packaging formats by 2030. Reusable Packaging: https://lnkd.in/d9JqYfnT Recyclable Packaging and Better Waste Collection: All packaging will need to be recyclable by meeting strict criteria. Minimum recycled content targets for plastic packaging and minimum recycling targets by weight of packaging waste are included. By 2029, 90% of single-use plastic and metal beverage containers (up to three liters) must be collected separately. Recyclable Packaging: https://lnkd.in/dzH_P3RC Next steps include formal approval by the Council before the agreement can enter into force. In 2018, packaging generated a turnover of EUR 355 billion in the EU. Without these new measures, packaging waste per person is expected to increase from 188.7 kg in 2021 to 209 kg in 2030. Passionate about Sustainable Packaging, design and communication | Be the change that you wish to see in the world
Over the past five years, the number of discussions, debates and articles related to the circular economy has almost tripled in spite of the global circularity rate falling from 9.1% to 7.2%.(Circle Economy Foundation) Despite the decline in this area I still have the utmost belief that companies will be able to implement reuse at scale. As the market grows certain processes will be standardized for best practices. I wanna be apart of that change.

EU Makes Landmark Move Towards Sustainable Packaging! Exciting news for eco-conscious businesses! The EU has reached a critical agreement on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), a major step towards a more sustainable future for packaging. Key takeaways for your business: - All packaging placed on the market must be recyclable, promoting a circular economy for packaging materials. - Restrictions on single-use plastic packaging will be implemented by 2030. Rise of reusable packaging: While mandatory reuse targets weren't established, the regulation encourages reusable packaging systems, especially in the hospitality sector (HORECA). - The potential of bio-based materials to replace fossil fuels in plastic packaging is recognized. We've included a link to an article about PPWR below. Text me if you'd like to learn more 🤳 #sustainablepackaging #eu #ppwr #ArtechPMS #SustainablePackaging

Snack-size packaging is convenient for our busy lives, but it also contributes to waste in our environment. It's great to see major brands making an effort to cut waste and eliminate the use of fossil-based plastics in their packaging. However, we need to ask if they're also looking back at their #supplychain to the #paperproduction. With #enzymes, the #paperindustry can #replacechemicals with #biosolutions, reducing their overall energy footprint and strengthening the quality of recovered fibers for more paper to be recycled. Let's continue to push for #biosolutions for packaging and production of paper and board. #sustainability #packaging #environment #Novonesis #Novozymes #pulpandpaper

Innovative thinking or just bananas? A couple of thoughts cross my mind after reading this article. What are the other components of the film and are they compatible with any recycling stream? When the current rate of recycling is about 5% for plastic, how in the world are we going to capture banana peels to turn them into packaging? On the brighter side, at least they decompose. #sustainablepackaging #zerowaste #recycling https://lnkd.in/d-bKqvmg
