About us

Hubbub is an award-winning creative charity that inspires action that’s good for the environment and for everyone. Since 2014 we’ve been forming unique collaborations across business and communities, and using behavioural insights, everyday language, and good design to make environmental choices desirable and more possible. Our campaigns meet people where they’re at, focussing on topics people care about that also have a big impact, like the food we eat, clothes we wear, green spaces and our communities. We show the collective power of people coming together to do what they can and use this as evidence to encourage government and business to make it easier for everyone to make greener choices too. So far, we’ve worked with over 2,630 organisations, supported 6,400 people to transform their way of living for the long-term, delivered over 180 campaigns and inspired more than 700,000 behaviour changes in 2023 alone. What this looks like in practice: - Habits for a lifetime: Collaborating with IKEA to create one of the world’s largest customer-facing behaviour change campaigns, Live LAGOM, supporting thousands of households to transform their daily habits, like cutting energy, food waste, buying less and repairing more. Launched in 2016, Live LAGOM continues to be central to IKEA’s strategy for supporting customers. - Championing communities: A thriving network of over 650 Community Fridges that have redistributed 18 million meals worth of surplus food within their communities. Supported by Co-op and Starbucks. - Making waves: A viral cigarette voting ashtray proven to cut litter by 46% and is currently featured across 43 countries worldwide. - Innovating always: £6.8 million invested in trialling new innovations and supporting community groups to replicate and scale proven initiatives. What’s Halloween got to do with climate change? First off, they’re both scary 👻   There's a frightening amount of food waste at Halloween, with as much as £41.3 million of pumpkin at risk of being binned this year (Hubbub 2024 polling) But there’s huge (pumpkin shaped) potential for Halloween to reduce food waste and be more environmentally friendly. We’ve been inspiring people to do this for over a decade with our Eat Your Pumpkin campaign! Is it working? The gourd news is: 🎃 3 in 5 people (59%) now know you can eat your carving pumpkin 🎃 Last year 10m fewer pumpkins ended up uneaten (in 2022 22.2m went to waste, in 2023 it was 12.2m) 🎃 People who saw our campaign in 2023 were three times more likely to eat their pumpkin So, this year we’ll be building on these successes and working towards the aim that no pumpkin goes uneaten. Can we all take steps towards enjoying a more sustainable Halloween, without scaring away the fun of the season? At Hubbub we think absolutely! What do you think is most important to focus on when speaking about sustainability around Halloween? Who else is doing great work in this space?

What makes a good bin? 🗑️ Steve Jobs obsessed over design details that led to the iPhone, iPad and MacBook. At Hubbub, we obsess over the humble bin.  People spend less than 2 seconds at a bin. So how do you make those seconds count to get more rubbish in bins, and in the correct bins too? Littering is a big problem, costing the UK government over £1 billion a year to clean up (Keep Britain Tidy). And it isn’t a problem you can solve with demands – in fact areas with harsh anti–litter messaging actually see higher rates of litter!  On top of that, there's the question of recycling bins and collecting the right materials... Here are our 4 top tips: 🚮 Be bold   Make your bins stand out. Surveys throughout our trials show that one of the key reasons for littering or not recycling was that there wasn’t a bin nearby (even though in many cases, there was!). 🚮 Keep it simple  Don’t overload the bin with messaging. Keep it to a sentence or two max. If drafting a design, see where your eye is naturally drawn to. 🚮 Shape matters  When collecting plastic bottles and cans for recycling, use a circular shaped opening. In Edinburgh, we saw a 20% drop in contamination in the recycling just from this. Make sure your general waste bin opening is large enough to fit all other kinds of rubbish. 🚮 Bins buddies  Always pair recycling bins with a general waste bin or use a dual bin to reduce contamination. People are wired to take the path of least resistance, and this means they often won’t sort waste at one bin and then walk to another. What does that look like in practise? Check out five of our favourite Hubbub-designed bins. #RecycleWeek #RecycleWeek2024

What does Jessie J know about clothing durability? 🧢 Quite a lot, it turns out. Our Worn Out study with Primark and the School of Design at the University of Leeds found there's no clear link between price and how long clothes last. Forget about the price tag - caring for your clothes is just as important. Building on this research, our Laundry Lowdown project explored how to: ➡️ Educate people on how to properly care for their clothes, to maximise their lifespan  ➡️ Push for more durable clothing with clothes designed to last Last week, Primark launched their new durability framework, inspired by research from WRAP, Hubbub, and the University of Leeds. This framework outlines how retailers can make clothes last longer, creating a more sustainable fashion industry. 👖 By working with Primark and UK consumers on the Laundry Lowdown, we found easy ways to extend garment life. Retailers can provide:  ➡️ Visual prompts (like a vinyl sticker for a washing machine or tips in delivery packaging) to nudge people to keep their clothes in top shape  ➡️ In-store and online resources to help shoppers decipher care instructions  ➡️ Accessible repair services to make garment repairs affordable and convenient for everyone Read our full report for project insights and industry recommendations ⬇️ To find out more about our work on responsible fashion – follow us @Hubbub – or subscribe to our business bulletin hubbub.org.uk/newsletter 💌

Is AI coming for our jobs!? Well, there's one kind of rubbish job we don't mind it taking...  Literally, counting rubbish! Last summer we ran #TidyRoadsides, an 8 week campaign to drive down roadside litter. We teamed up with Ellipsis Earth who use AI and image-capturing technology to conduct detailed litter surveying: 👀 covered almost 10 million sqm area 🥤 identified 192,436 items including the distribution, type, material, weight, and volume 🤔 found roadside litter was much higher at slow-speed locations like junctions and slip roads With accurate litter data, we could then target the litter hotspots with designed interventions making it easier for road users to bin rubbish and be more willing to do so. A second litter mapping showed that: 📍 Our data-driven interventions were 4 to 5 times more effective in reducing litter than untargeted interventions ✅ The combo of bins and signs boosted the performance of each by 25% 🥇 And last week, Tidy Roadsides won the gold award for Technology for Good at Global Good Awards! And if you think the photo looks similar to one you saw last week, ahem, yes we did win 2 awards that night! Want to see more like this? We've open sourced all the learnings and resources from this campaign, allowing them to be scaled and help create impact in other places too. Free to download at www.neatstreets.org.uk! 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧?   It's something we joked about when we first put Liam vs. Noel on a Big Ballot Bin in Manchester, in our #PickYourSide campaign, testing whether our new voting bins could tackle litter and get people talking rubbish.   Timely questions like Barbie vs. Oppenheimer, and the never-ending Cats vs. Dogs debate sparked a viral reaction - 15% of people in the UK alone saw the bins! The creative approach cut through the usually mundane topic of litter, and the bins were 2.5x more effective at reducing litter according to independent surveying by Ellipsis Earth. From going viral, to a (possibly, potentially, probably related) reunion, we're pretty proud of #PickYourSide, and yesterday it was voted Behaviour Change Campaign of the Year at the Global Good Awards!   A huge thanks to our partners KFC UK & Ireland, Manchester City Council and Southampton City Council for trusting us with trialling our solar-powered, interactive and customisable bin, beautifully brought to life by design partner Instrument Industries.    This win has made us all the more excited to continue developing our most advanced voting bin yet. Who'll make the greatest comeback? Oasis or the Big Ballot Bins? #PickYourSide and follow along for their next appearance: https://lnkd.in/g-pD2ZeS

What’s better, launching a new community initiative, or growing an existing one to double the impact?  ⚖️   There’s not a straight answer to the question of whether funding should prioritise expansion or existing infrastructure, of course (unless you said both) but our Community Fridge Network provides a useful example. 🥕 In the past, much of our funding has gone towards establishing new fridges and directly expanding the network. However, this year in partnership with Co-op we introduced the Investment Fund, a pot of grant funding which works differently. The funding is to help existing fridges:     - Run more efficiently - Support their volunteers and visitors better - Serve their communities for longer   In October we launched the first round of funding, which provided 106 grants totalling £614,000. This funding is really important to make sure that the fridges we fund don’t just open their doors but can keep them open and operate at their best.     Want to know more or find out how you can support the network?
