Kudos to the Firefighters in Surprise AZ for taking a measured, experienced approach to a hybrid vehicle garage fire this month. Because a battery was burning, they took every precaution with air toxicity issues, water demands, and calling in resources across the Valley. After knocking down the structural fire with water, Firefighters used an EV fire blanket to ultimately control the scene and evacuate the burning hybrid. They also stressed how the regional Departments have shared their collective EV fire experiences to improve response. This is a training model from which all Departments can learn. EV Safety Inc supplies NFPA 701 Standard Certified EV Fire Blankets and other peripherals that are rated to 2,550 degrees farenheit. EV fires are causing an inordinate number of Firefighter injuries, make sure your fire blanket supplier has taken steps to ensure quality control with rigorous NFPA testing standards. www.evsafetyproducts.com https://lnkd.in/eG-YRzn6

In a recent incident in Pasco County, Florida, a devastating house fire was sparked by a lithium-ion battery in a cordless drill. This event, reported by 10 Tampa Bay, underscores the potential hazards associated with lithium-ion battery technology. The fire, which originated in the garage, caused extensive damage to the house, highlighting the importance of safety and awareness when handling devices powered by these batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are prevalent in many household items, including power tools, smartphones, and laptops. They can pose significant risks if not used or maintained properly. In the Pasco County case, the battery in the cordless drill was charging when it overheated and ignited, leading to the fire. This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of following safety guidelines when using lithium-ion batteries. It is advisable to unplug batteries once fully charged and to invest in devices with advanced battery safety features. Awareness and proper handling can prevent such tragic incidents. The "Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety" campaign by the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) is a comprehensive effort aimed at educating the public about the safe use of lithium-ion batteries. This campaign comes in response to the increasing number of fire incidents caused by these batteries. They emphasize the following steps for the safe use and handling of lithium-ion batteries: 1. Ensure that the lithium-ion battery-powered products you buy have listings or certifications from recognized testing labs. 2. Adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines for using and charging your devices. Avoid altering the batteries or their chargers. Store and charge them in environments free from extreme temperatures and away from flammable materials. Charge larger devices like e-bikes in safe locations, preferably not while you are asleep. 3. Regularly inspect your devices for any signs of damage, such as battery expansion or punctures. Be alert to unusual noises, overheating, or odd smells. If you notice anything suspicious, immediately stop using the device. 4. Dispose of old or damaged batteries and electronic devices at designated recycling centers. Avoid throwing them in regular garbage bins. 5. Familiarize yourself with the indicators of a battery problem and have an evacuation plan in place. In case of a fire, leave the area at once, close doors behind you, and contact emergency services. Visit https://lnkd.in/g_2w6Q9j References: 10 Tampa Bay. (2024, January 27). Thunderstorm Safety Nowhere is safe outside when a thunderstorm is in the area. Get inside as soon as you hear thunder. Run to a substantial building or hard-topped metal vehicle as fast as you can. If you can’t get to a safe building or vehicle and you are caught outside with no safe shelter nearby, the following actions may reduce your risk: Avoid open areas. Don’t be the tallest object in the area Never shelter under an isolated tree, towers, or utility poles. Lightning tends to strike the taller objects in an area Stay away from metal objects that conduct electricity (such as barbed wire fences, power lines, or windmills). Metal does not attract lightning, but lightning can travel long distances through it If you are with a group of people, spread out. While this actually increases the chance that someone might get struck, it tends to prevent multiple casualties, and increases the chances that someone could help if a person is struck Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges, or peaks. Never lie flat on the ground. Crouch down in a ball-like position with your head tucked and hands over your ears so that you are down low with minimal contact with the ground. Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter. Immediately get out of and away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water. If you are out in the open water and a storm rolls in, return to shore immediately. Avoid open vehicles such as convertibles, motorcycles, and golf carts. Avoid open structures such as porches, gazebos, baseball dugouts, and sports arenas. These structures won’t protect you from lightning. Stay away from open spaces such as golf courses, parks, playgrounds, ponds, lakes, swimming pools, and beaches. Seek shelter immediately. Cardiac arrest is the immediate cause of death for those who die. Lightning victims do not carry an electrical charge and may need first aid immediately. If someone is struck: Call 911 · If possible, move the victim to a safer place Give first aid. Begin CPR if you are trained Use an Automatic External Defibrillator if one is available. These units are lifesavers Don’t be a victim — lightning can strike twice! 3moNo surprise that the city of Tempe has chosen E-ONE. As one of the most progressive and forward thinking cities in Arizona, which includes their downtown trolley system, and the Rio Salado/Tempe Town Lake project that reinvented the city, Tempe has shown that quality, reliability and total cost of ownership is more important than your standard acquisition cost most municipalities use to build their city infrastructure.
